I started another thread a couple months ago (you responded to that one) and I've been recently giving updates.
I got the "bug" again a few months ago but wanted to get down to 180 (I was a soft 200) and then start over. I've been doing some decidedly non-powerlifting type workouts just to build mental toughness, stamina, and muscle. Starting Nov 1 the real work begins. I'll still do things a little "different" but I'm positive
for me this way will work.
I plan on using very little rest (less than a minute between sets) and just crushing the body part in 20-30 minutes. It will have a bodybuilding tempo but I'll be doing traditional PL movements and one or two "helper" excercises per training session.
For instance....on DL day I'll do a warm up set then two all out working sets. IF the second set leaves anything left (IE - I got too many reps) I'll go up in weight and do one more set. Then I'll do either one or two sets of Power Cleans or Stiff Legged DLs or something else that works the posterior. Then maybe some
heavy ab work.
That's it! I've found with my metabolism (
slowwwww) and my recovery time (long) I just don't need to spend all day lifting. I learned this last summer. My partner and I started lifting at lightning speed. The first set was the "money" set and the rest were just about finding that weak link and hammering it. With little to no rest I've found that my weakest link will rise to the surface. If I rest too long my stronger muscles will recover in time to cheat and carry the load. With the way I'm doing it now the strongest link gets nailed first and then the additional sets are all about digging for the weak guys. The con is that it's exhausting....the pro is that I'm done in 30 minutes or less. I now spend less than 90 minutes
a week lifting and I'm about
this close to the best shape of my life. Now I just have to be patient and trust my system to get stronger. I'm tweaking my eating to get the most out of 181 I can. Eating has always been the hardest for me but lately I've been in a groove and I'm excited about seeing how things play out. It's almost like a self-science experiment!
Man, thanks for chatting. I lost my lifting partner (he got transfered) and I have no one else to talk to this about. It's cool that there are some lifters here!
