Opinions vary. They don't focus on one area as much, which could be both good and bad, depending on your focus. One problem people have told me they have is you can't effectively do wide grip pushups because the handles force your wrists into a straight up and down position.

I really like them, they give my shoulders more range of motion so which keeps them from aching as much.

Just do bench presses. Seriously, If you like gadjets, like I do, I would get them. If nothing else they are a gimic you can use because you want to play with the new toy so you'll do the push ups.

I don't lift weights, I do a little cardio work out a few times a week on the Gazelle. I'm not interested in body building, just a little tone up and weight loss.

Not if you're trying to add weight!

Push ups are a great exercise for maintaining mass and shape-especially if you are having time difficulties or you are especially tired. I find that iof I have had a very busy week with a disrupted program, the push ups are great.

I try for 100, usually in 'sets' to failure and really focus on pumping as much blood as possible into the pecs, triceps and delts. Once you get to about 40 you are haviong to really push through which has the same effect as a short heavy set on the bench.

No they don't. While the burn is there (to be sure!), you are still only moving a percentage of your bodyweight. Nowhere near the same thing as laying under a bar with 8 plates and squeezing the last couple of reps. Totally different muscle fiber stimulation.

Hmmm..have to disagree. Having said that I'm not advocating pushups as a replacement for bench-where iI do agree with you. The point is if you are pushing through failure the concept of deep fibre mechanics changes. Actual weight factor does as well because the muscle is operating at a maximum. Pace of movement is a big factor as well. In the end it it is what works for the individual.

I put on more mass this way when I was in the army than by benching-but the caveat is that I have a much higher active percentage of fast twitch fibres than slow twitch. though now I find that bench, with dips and flys is where my strength improvements come from.

Cheers Arttie-nice to cyber meet you Very Happy

Welcome!

Well, as a competitive bodybuilder/powerlifter and a certified personal trainer, I would stand by my statement, but it is also about individual genetics, mechanics, and ability.

That being said, I can do push-ups all day and not get what I get from my power pyramid benching style.

Do your shoulders and wallet a favor just learn to do pushups correctly, then add weight. Weights vests, chains, sandbags drapped over your back or even your wife/gf

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmwIEnczYf8&feature=fvsr

Basically getting strong at push ups will help your bench press numbers and keep your shoulders healthy.

I haven't read this thread for a while now but I have to agree with Artie on the Bench Press vs. Push-Up debate. That being said...I got the perfect pushup gadjet and I like them...but after my bench presses.
