Are those free squats? I know without the rack I wouldn't be as high as I am.

What do you mean by free squats?

I squat out of this thing. The "catch" bars are about 3-4" below parallel for me so I can get plenty deep. If I get stuck, I just take it all the way down and squirm out from under it.

No rack, just you a bar with weights on it and gravity.

Oh! You mean -vs- a machine or hack squat, or smith machine?

I edited my post above to show you my rack, while you posted.

Yeah, I use a smith, saves my back.

Well, I've used one and I don't think it makes things that much easier. Safer, yes, but it's still heavy weight if the weights are heavy! Very Happy Don't sell yourself short, the weight you're moving is fantastic!

The only problem with a Smith Machine (which can also be a useful tool) is that you are locked into a groove and your path of descent/ascent is dictated for you. Now, I say it can be useful because you can modify foot position to work your quads in different ways. However, it is easy to cheat with a Smith because you can always use leverage to push backwards and upwards at the same time, which makes the lift easier.

That being said, there is nothing wrong with the weights you are using....

And that is a good looking, old-school power rack, Scott! Looks homemade!

It is. I did some manual labor for a guy and wanted that rack as payment -vs- actual money. One cold morning we went to his shop and he welded it while I helped. Once in my garage I painted it, and that's that. It's a great rack, sturdy and perfect for my needs. (Although I wouldn't mind a power-rack as well)

I need to get to Texas so we can do a lift session together. I have an Uncle I don't hardly know anymore down there and some cousins, might be time for an obscure family visit.

Middle of Washington, on the edge of the Mountains. Little too far to drive.

Twisted Evil Ah, my sarcasm is lost on you.

One cousin lives in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area last I knew and my Uncle is in a little town I can't remember but it's north central, if they also haven't moved.
