| I have had a doctor and a gym teacher (back in the day) tell me that it is best to have Heavy lifting day and the next be light lifting and so on... I just got this new magazine called "Exercise for Men" Yes VERY good weightlifting and how to book and it says that SLOW reps are the way to go, my question is though is (and I need to work on the being patient thing) the question is seriously how long DOES it take to see results with weight lifting? I want to lose the belly and man boobs and I want to gain ab musles and work on my arms and chest. I have a family history with bad backs and health problems so I really do want to get fit. God also gave me ONE body to last ONE WHOLE LIFETIME, and I want to take care of it. I was told way back to lose the belly fat and chest fat and THEN weight lift, but doesn't weight lifting eat away at fat? I am open to all opinions/ suggestions, I WILL NOT take pills or supliments though Thanks guys! |

| Hey Zebadiah.
I'm glad you're doing this thing.

You start building muscle/getting stronger just about immediately.

I took me a loooong time to come to grips with this. You have to eat a LOT less. I don't know you, don't know your habits - nothing. But I know this without asking because I was in the same boat....you're eating too much. That's 80+% of getting this thing right. You have to eat properly. It will not be easy. Having family members, partners and friends on board really helps.
My weakness is when the food is present. SO, I always have a plan.
I Grocery shop on a full stomach.
I travel with my meals if I know I'm going to be out of the house over the period of a meal time. This was huge for me. If I'm out and about running errands or having fun with my kids and I get hungry I'm headed straight for McDonald's or BK or what have you. Now, I take my food with me so I never get tempted.
Set realistic but challenging goals. I think Jim touched on that. Don't say "I must lose 75# by Sept 1. Say, "I will lose 2 pounds this week". Do it, then set the next goal. Something like that.
Find foods that combine a great health benefit BUT that you still like. If you're choking down something you hate you'll only last so long. There are the true freaks of the world that can basically choke down egg whites, tuna and spinach indefinitely, but they are rare and are probably driven internally by something dangerous. ??

As long as you're physically able, start lifting weights right away. Combine that with walking, dancing (maybe you're wife likes the two-step? Take her boot-scooting once a week), get a part time job mowing two extra lawns a week with a push mower...something. Again, you have to find something that burns fat that you don't hate, but still gets the job done. WII fitness games have really helped people.

That's cool. I try to get all of my vitamins and minerals from food. Now, what exactly are you defining as supplements? Protein bars and powers are in the supplement industry, but they are great weapons for me. They are the convenient things I travel with on those errands. I don't eat them all the time and try to eat normal food when I can, but when I know I'm going to be away from home/kitchen those are life savers.
If that's still too much, well, you have granola bars, yogurt cups, etc. Single serving things that you can carry with you is the key. Fruit is a good one. God's perfect food that comes in its own wrapper.
This board has some dudes who have "been there/done that" and have good knowledge. My knowledge is narrow and mostly based on my experiences, but I know some others will chime in.
Good luck and God bless! _________________ Hey kid!

| Thank you scottmitchell74 for replying and for replying with all that you did Anyway, eating is a HUGE one for me. I LOVE to eat! I am actually praying that I meet a woman who loves and knows HOW to cook. I know that sounds soooo bad when I am trying to lose weight and get "muscular" but I do, I love food! I am getting into vegetables and I am definitely a MEAT eater 1000% man. I do eat a lot. My one big problem though is after I get done working out even if I have eaten before or after is that I am hungry but it is the "empty stomach" sydrome and it drives me insane. Okay, there is something else, I have something HUGE and this is something that is very personal that I have only told 1 person and that is from my church, so here goes... I want to look good, I want to look desirable to a Christian woman because I know that I would like a very beyond beautiful woman myself. Well, when I was in 10th grade I met this girl and that woman was insanely beautiful. Well, we broke up and I saw her maybe 2 times since then. It has been six years, I know 6 years. But I think about her every single day and wish and pray that she gets saved. Well, at my work we had this new girl start named Melissa and my girlfriends name WAS Melissa! Well her last name even sounded 70% the same. Well I told her that I new a girl from the same town that she is from and I wasn't going to because I was afraid I would hear what I did NOT want to hear, God moves... I told her that I knew this girl and she goes "Melissa... she's pregnant!" And I tell you, I had something happen that I still don't understand. I wanted to cry, I told her though that I knew her and I ended that conversation. I thank GOD about that though! With that I am able to NOW after 6 years to move on. I am ready to also get healthy and concentrate on what "IS" important now. I know that sounds pathetic but hey... I cannot explain it. But I pray that she gets saved. Anyway, I am trying to get healthy though and you know, I truly believe that if I pray to God for a beautiful woman with a God given body I need to put my effort in not only for myself but for God who created me and to give her something too! Hearing that though the other day released a 6 year anxiety that I cannot explain and a relief that I cannot explain. I am not trying to sound pathetic, there is and was a reason I feel the way I do about her and I will continue to pray for her salvation. I am thinking about opening up a "Journey" Diary on here for anyone who wants to get some inspiration and just for me to have something to feel accountable for. I have been wanting this for 8 years to get into shape, and I am tired of wishing. Sorry for the looooooong reply but I needed to get this out. Thank you for listening! May God Bless you and if there is anything else you can recommend or talk about, IM OPEN! |

| You have to remember, you are wanting to "build" muscle.. To build anything you need raw materials and that is food. For the next week keep a diet journal. List everything that goes into your mouth and how much. Do a search for serving sizes so you'll have an idea of what a serving is. I'll try to find it too. Look for something that says a serving of meet is the size of a deck of cards, a serving of vegetables is the size of your fist, etc. The point I am trying to make here is I want you to be aware of what you're eating. I can guarantee you that you will be very surprised with what you'll find at the end of the week. I already am pretty sure what you'll see but I'll fill you in later. I want you to do this work. On to training...There are so many ways to train and so many reasons to train that way. Now don't take this as an insult to doctors or gym teachers but whatdoes your doctor look like? Is he strong? Most gym teachers are there because they are a coach at the school and need a teaching job to do so. And most coaches in the U.S. know little to nothing about proper weight training. Keep this in mind too, I know you are wanting to "get in shape" which to you probably means lose weight. It should be to lose fat and building muscle will help you do that. The more muscle mass you have the more calories your body burns in a resting state. |

| | Yeah Jim I agree with you 100% on the eating part. I need to cut back and I guess suffer the hunger but eat for health and not for fun right now! I will stick to this and thank you for the info and yes I will be keeping a diary of my eating. |

| Zeb, I think you have it wrong. What I expect you'll see from a food diary is that you aren't eating nearly as much as you think. What you are eating is probably junk so you need to make better choices. I see food as 2 things...fuel and something to enjoy. They can be both but not always. As a fellow food lover you probably have heard of Paula Dean...southern cooking at it's best. My wife cooks like here sometimes. Paula will fry butter in butter!!!!! This isn't bad once in a while but you can't do it all the time. Some good advice I heard was get enough protein in at each meal. It the protein first then if you are still hungry eat the other stuff until you aren't hungry anymore. Notice I didn't say eat until you are FULL. And drink lots of water. |

| Ask a hundred people the same question and you will get 50 answers. Slow reps, fast reps, high reps, low reps...they all work to varying degrees, depending upon your goals. | First, I know exactly how you feel about wanting to look desirable.
What's important is not to eat less. You can eat as much as you want as long as it's balanced (vedgetables, meat, bread, etc etc) and as long as you do enough exercises to loose the calories. Plus, us as christians have a big plus when it comes to accomplishing things: we have The Lord on our side. I was fat before, really fat. Then I got tired of it all and asked Jesus to help me loose weight, simply. Of course, I didn't sat on my butt to loose my weight. I did alot of exercises to loose weight and spent 1 hour a day 5 days a week at the gym. I prayed too that god would help me build muscles, and what hapenned? I built muscles really fast compared to others. Some people will say some build muscles easier than others, but if you ask God with a pure heart, you shall receive.
Here is a pic of me 1 year and a half ago.

And now.

God has really helped me get a better self-esteem and I am very grateful. Prayer, faith, and a pure heart is all you need to have everything that could make you happy on earth.
Btw, I lost 55 pounds. |
