I think cheat days are essential, up until the last week or two before a bodybuilding show. They help you maintain your sanity, act as rewards for 6 straight days of hard dieting, and do, in fact, help keep your metabolism from flatlining. However, a cheat day doesn't mean sitting down and eating a whole cake with a tub of ice cream on the side. I try to use the cheat days for foods I LOVE to eat that still have muscle building benefits, such as pasta (lasagna, especially).
