A good ab routine is anything that keeps fat off the body. So find a way to burn calories that you know you'll keep up with and eat "cleaner" as, unfortunately, the metabolism slows down as we age. It sucks but we can never go back to our old ways of eating unless we become lumberjacks or steel workers (or something like that). Actually "doing abs" will help strengthen your core but there's no one ab workout that makes you see your abs. It's being lean all over.....

That's been my hard earned "discovery of experience" Smile

well... that much i'm aware of.
i just need some additional routines. i know if you stick with the same routine over and over, it loses effectiveness. you need to mix it up, every so often.

One exercise I do is to lay with my legs extended off the bench press bench straight out and then draw them in while raising my head trying to bring my knees and head together. Do this 50 straight times and I guarantee you will feel it and it's good for the lower stomach which is sometimes hard to work. I do stomach five days a week and I do tons of reps. All those less then 5 minute a day ads are lying.
And at almost 40 the days of living on pizza and soda are behind me. Sad

So true; Being an avid bodybuilder for many years, I tend to just fall into the "meat gym" mentality, that is, just go hardcore all the time, not bother mixing things up, etc. But the last year or so, I have broadened my horizons, getting into different stuff I never considered before.

My latest venture is Yoga/Pilates & I can tell you when you hit muscles with routines you are not accustomed to, they really respond. I can tell my core is much tighter since I have incorporated Yoga into my regimen, & the flexibility I have been achieving feels really great!

Don't know if I really have any specific routines to suggest; I know for me, lying on my back & bringing my knees to my chest & variants of that have always worked well, esp. for the lower abs. As you stated, mixing things up is the best idea. If you Google ab routines, you will get a ton of hits.

Also, Bodybuilding.com is a good resource. Good luck!

Abs suck! It's the hardest part of my body to keep under control. My arms, legs, shoulders, chest, are all solid but I cannot seem to lose that layer of FAT around the middle no matter how good I eat or how many crunches I do.

I hear when the body starts to store metal, the abdomen is the first place it goes to. Though by no means should you reduce your consumption.

that's the way i feel.
i have no trouble with my upper body or back and my legs are pretty tight, but keeping the abs together is a chore.
