| Arttie: Yeah, it does take some of the excitement outta it. But the advance scoring with the computerized scoring loops embedded in the track and chips in each car make it easy to virtually freeze the field. They say it really is safer for any stranded/still car.Kuba: Sorry it took a minute to get back to ya. I was double-checking some websites. (I've got 'em all noted as Favs without the real addresses for me to see!) Check speedtv.com; under Nascar you'll find the cutaway car link. Great for basic bits on everything about the cars!!In 1988, Awesome Bill (Elliott) from Dawsonville had a break through season, reaching 200+m miles per hour routinely. Other teams were also breaking records and speeds were climbing radically. Several severe wrecks, and NASCAR knew they had to do something for safety. Of course, the teams didn't want any limits.Restrictor plates was the compromise. Before the races at Daytona and Talladega (the fastest superspeedways), NASCAR allows teams to pull a restrictor plate outta a hat. NASCAR builds the plates, everyone pulls them randomly. That way there is no favortism and no one can *play* with the plates to adjust them from specs. The plate itself is fairly simple, a sheet of aluminum with exactly sized holes bored completely through. It fits between the carburetor and the intake manifold. It limits power and speed on the same engine the team created for every other race, saving them that hastle and expense. The curse of the plate is it limits power and speed bringing everyone's car to nearly the same level. Add that to the hugh impact wind flow has on the COT/modern car and...*the cars can't really pass, no one has any extra *umph**anyone without a drafting partner (cars in a railroad train figuration, close enough that the wind treats them as one entity) will be left far behind, not able to fight the wind and keep up to speed*wrecks are big and affect multiple teams because all the cars are traveling in a pack*pit stops must be coordinated with a drafting partner or you'll never re-join the race (see above, lack of speed)Is that TMI?_________________ |

Then I will never get it. Just going around in circles is a snoozefest to me. Put them out on the open road with multiple left and right turns, and then we're talking!

My joke was aimed more at the fans than the drivers. In Tennessee, you will see whole families decked from head to toe (literally) with Nascar gear on. You will see a bunch of stereotypical rednecks this way complete with beer guts and no teeth. While it may appeal to the intellectual crowd in some areas, that's not the crowd you draw in Bristol. You still have people here that have memorials to Dale Earnheart on the back windows of their pickup trucks. Sometimes, you just have to let go. He was just a man--not god of the track. I wouldn't be so hard on the fans or the sport if it weren't for the whole "religion aspect" of it. In Tennessee, the two largest religions are football and Nascar. I've seen too many people skip church to watch a game or a race and then tell other people that they need to be in church on Sundays._________________ "I have no desire to speak w/other tongues, I already do enough damage w/the one I have!!" - Candlemass |

| I keep track of some Nascar, did more so in the 90's when Gordon ruled the track and I wonder if he has one more title in him. _________________ I don't have time for all if it, so I pick my battles. That's so true otherwise overeating would be a sport. _________________ I don't have time for all if it, so I pick my battles. Snoozefest--O--rama. Like Alldat said...... going around and around and around and around and around in circles = Greg finding something else to do besides watch NASCAR. _________________ "The 'farce' is strong with Sith Lord Obama-Wan." words of Scourge.

| Hey.......here's an idea. Let the NASCAR driver of your choice see how many Roman Imperial cohorts he can blast through at 175 MPH before a well thrown legionary pilum finds its mark and kills the driver, thereby ending his deadly rampage. I'd watch that......and cheer on the Romans. _________________ "The 'farce' is strong with Sith Lord Obama-Wan." words of Scourge.

| Daytona & Talladega is some of the best racing of the year. The cars are pretty much within a few feet of each other the entire race. Some of the newer tracks are very "cookie cutter" and I find those races boring. These are the tracks were somebody gets like a 8-10 sec. lead over the rest of the field. Bristol is a good race, as well as the road courses. I'm a sophisticated "HillBilly" and I'm currently getting edubacated. The twins ought' to be good Thursday. KingsRite _________________ KingsRite
