PostSubject: Re: "Militaria Makes The World Go-Round."   Mon Sep 21, 2009 10:08 am

It was successful, so, it flew well and out-maneuvered other planes...but, it was named after an animal that did not see too much combat, as compared to the horse.....so....

I don't know, I wanted to guess that it had to do with it's flying, but, I guess I am going to say it had to do with fuel consumption......I know I'm wrong...but, I don't want to hold the thread up.

Points:

1. L8T said:

Quote:
Hopefully this explanation distracts from my obvious failure.

And I did

2. Since everyone has now chimed in i'll provide the right answer, but before I do Mr.Electric said:

Quote:
I left GW speechless gotta love it.

And I did

Gee.....and here I thought only my wife could do that.

3. The question was:

"So.......let's see how much you Sopwith Camel lovers know about the plane.

Why was it named the *Camel*?"

4. L8T and FSW answered that the Sopwith Camel's name had something to do with its miserly fuel consumption.

Black Rider, Intrigued1, and Mr.Electric are the Gang Of Three.

They all say it was the *hump* over the gun breeches.

5. And the corrrect answer is........(Insert drumroll sounds here).......The Sopwith Camel derived its name from the hump, or bulge, the fuselage fairing formed over the breeches of the two Vickers machine guns placed just forward of the cockpit.

6. Another one for you Sopwith Camel lovers. Pick three of the eight listed below after the new question.

The Sopwith Camel is arguably the most famous and well--known of Sopwith's stable of famous fighters of WW I. That said, Sopwith also produced some other airplanes, all three of them fighters I seek, which are extremely famous and extremely well--known among WW I aviation buffs. (Like me) What were the other three?

Sopwith Baby

Sopwith Salamander

Sopwith Snipe

Sopwith Pup

Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter

Sopwith Triplane

Sopwith Cuckoo

Sopwith Dolphin

Three of the eight. BTW before anyone comes back at me and says, "That is too subjective. Besides, they are all famous." I'll come back and say, "No. Not all of them are even remotely famous; only the three I look for. And even among the really good ones on that list, there are three that are hands down, and far away, ahead of the rest of the stable listed above."

Decide.

I could keep the Sopwith Camel related questions coming for most of the rest of this year.

Hm... I've heard of the Pup and the Triplane.... The third, I'll just take a shot in the dark and say the 1 1/2 Strutter. Razz

I am going with the pack....

Pup, Triplane, and their first big success, the Strutter 1 1/2.

Love the Herd mentality!

Points, including the answer and a new question:

1. So we now have the *Gang Of Five*.

The stupid and illiterate shiver in fear.

The Gang Of Five rides

2. The question was, "The Sopwith Camel is arguably the most famous and well--known of Sopwith's stable of famous fighters of WW I. That said, Sopwith also produced some other airplanes, all three of them fighters I seek, which are extremely famous and extremely well--known among WW I aviation buffs. (Like me) What were the other three?

Sopwith Baby

Sopwith Salamander

Sopwith Snipe

Sopwith Pup

Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter

Sopwith Triplane

Sopwith Cuckoo

Sopwith Dolphin"

3. And the correct answer is........(Insert drumroll sounds here)......the Sopwith Pup, Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter, and the Sopwith Triplane.

These were all superb airplanes which saw a lot of action, and acquitted themselves very well against the German and Austrian opposition in the skies.

That said.....how did you all know it was those three??

4. The new question.

On October 27, 1918 the Canadian ace, superb pilot, and superb marksman with his machine guns, did what still seems like the impossible. William "Billy" Barker found himself engaged by at least 60 German fighters. Barker did not really go looking for this one--sided battle, he more or less wandered into the midst of that large German formation. The Germans comprised three types of airplane, Fokker D. VII, Albatros D. V, and Albatros D. Va fighters. Barker actually shot down four of the Germans before he was himself shot down and crash--landed behind Allied lines. He spent the remainder of the war in a hospital recovering from wounds received in that battle.

Barker was flying a Sopwith fighter. What type was it?

Sopwith Camel

Sopwith Baby

Sopwith Salamander

Sopwith Snipe

Sopwith Pup

Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter

Sopwith Triplane

Sopwith Cuckoo

Sopwith Dolphin

Decide.

This is a closed book test. *Squashnar The Powerful* frowns mightily upon cheating.

I feel so unloved. I tried to make you very, very sad. I am losing my touch. If this keeps up, I'll have to bring back the Shartacus avatar.

Instead, you made me happy.

You are indeed losing your touch.

Alldat makes me happy!!

We love Alldat!!

Now that said.....what Sopwith fighter was Barker flying??

Just for the heck of it, I'm going to say it was the Camel. There was a famous WWI ace who flew one... Not sure who it was, but I know Snoopy wasn't the original WWI ace... He was just imitating him.

I know because i've done some research on Thomas Sopwith and his airplanes. Thank-you Snoopy.

I'm kind of guessing here but the Snipe is what first jumped at me. That's not official, let me rack my brain.

At least you have one to rack.

I don't.

When I was younger and not a Christian......I used to think with my groin.

However, I am older and a Christian so I now think with my gut.

O.K. so we have one for the Camel and one for the Snipe (unofficially).

BTW if you've never read anything on William Barker I would recommend it. His story is just......amazing. I think he scored about 50 kills altogether. Here is a short primer and introduction to Barker if anyone wants to look at it. There is much, much more out there if you look for it. Of course, I recommend the books. I've read a couple.....superb, amazing man.

Did Rickenbacker fly a Camel?

I'll go with a Sopwith Camel for the current question as I really don't know and since the gang hasn't appeared yet...

will wait and see....

I'm going with Snipe. It's a guess but it's an uneducated one. Who's with me?
