L8T, Black Rider, and Intrigued1 have answered. Let's wait for Mr.Electric to weigh in with his answer. Then, tomorrow night, i'll give out the correct answer before I disappear from La--La--Land to Montana for the better part of a week. Arrow Arrow

PostSubject: Re: "Militaria Makes The World Go-Round."   Mon Aug 17, 2009 1:00 am

Several points, including the answer to the question/quote, and a new question/quote:

1. Mr.Electric said:

Quote:
Great now I have to make an immediate choice.... I was out all day yesterday....

Shocked

And I did weep.

(I weep better with a bat in my hands)

2. L8T said:

Quote:
Now I see why your computer blew up! Razz

And I did lol!

And this:

Quote:
As for E, I, once again, can not be fooled....I read Tiberius Cassius Clay's memoirs, as translated by his cousin, Lewis Alcindor Maximus,...and, Clay claims that he was never beaten in chekers "or any other manly pursuit" by Burtonus.

And again I lol!

He also said:

Quote:
As for the planes. Planes are Cool!

I love military airplanes. I especially love WW II airplanes, from all nations, of all uses/employments, whether day or night usage. My very favorites of all are the planes of the WW II German Air Force (Luftwaffe).

My military interests are wide--ranging in time, scope, and topics, but WW II airplanes are the bestest. Twisted Evil

4. The question/quotation was:

"Woe to the vanquished."

Who said it?

A--Marshal of the Soviet Union Georgi K. Zhukov. Zhukov said this to German Field-Marshal Friedrich Von Paulus on February 2, 1943. Paulus was beginning negotiations with the Marshal as to the surrender terms of the German Sixth Army under his command at Stalingrad. Of course, Paulus hoped to achieve some terms that were, in some way, favorable to his troops--who were devastated and at the end of their ropes, so to speak. Paulus' hopes were dashed when he was informed by Zhukov that, "Woe to the vanquished." and the German surrender at Stalingrad was to be without terms, and unconditional.

B--Muslim commander Saladin at the aftermath of the Battle Of The Horns Of Hattin. Salah ed-Dīn Yusuf ibn Ayyub said this to the Crusader commander Guy Of Lusignan on July 4, 1187 A.D. Saladin's army had just badly defeated Guy's Christian army at Hattin and Guy was negotiating the terms of surrender with Saladin. As part of the terms Saladin was actually quite generous to the defeated Christians. However, Saladin emphatically insisted on executing all of the captured Templars (Knights Of The Temple Of Solomon In Jerusalem) and Hospitallers (Knights Of The Hospital Of Saint John In Jerusalem) as being the Christian holy warriors they were, and not deserving of life, unless they converted to Islam. Only a handful did; the rest were beheaded in the Islamic fashion. Guy protested these executions, but was told by Saladin, "Woe to the vanquished." and they would get, and deserved, no mercy.

C--The Celtic war--chieftain Brennus. Brennus had invested (besieged) Rome and conducted it so successfully that his Celtic forces broke into the city and tore it to pieces. This happened in about 386 B.C. The Celtic army of Brennus had assaulted Rome, broken into it, and had been ravaging it for several days. The Roman Tribune Sulpicius was given safe passage to Brennus. When Sulpicius arrived at the headquarters of Brennus he negotiated a stop to the razing (destruction) of Rome. The Celts asked for 1,000 pounds of gold. They got it, in the end. However, when negotiating this Sulpicius complained that this was too harsh. In reply Brennus drew his sword, tossed it onto the scale to be used for measuring out the gold, and said to Sulpicius, "Woe to the vanquished." The Roman translator was told this in Celtic, and translated it into Latin, "Vae victus."

D--The Japanese General Yamashita. Yamashita said this at the end of the Battle Of Singapore on February 15, 1942. The British bastion of Malaysia, and Singapore, had been under Japanese attack since December 8, 1941. The British Lt. General Arthur Percival had entered into surrender negotiations with Yamashita as Yamashita's troops had broken into the--last stand--British defences at Singapore. Percival gave up and wished to procure favorable surrender terms from the Japanese. The Japanese were in no mood to be nice, however. Yamashita said to the British, "Woe to the vanquished." and there would be no mercy given to the Brits and their Indian allied troops. None was shown and thousands died before the Brits and Indians even reached the P.O.W. camps.

E--Richardus Burtonus said this to his aide Tiberius Cassius Clay as Clay was beaten at checkers by Burtonus. Burtonus said Clay must drink water for one week. Clay protested and this was when Burtonus said, "Woe to the vanquished."

5. Intrigued1 said the Islamic commander Saladin, as did Black Rider.

L8T said the Celtic war--chieftain Brennus, as did Mr.Electric.

6. And the correct answer is......(Insert drumroll here)......C--The Celtic war--chieftain Brennus.

7. Razz Sounds like something a Celt would say. Twisted Evil

To be fair......had I not known the answer.....I can also see how it was something Saladin may have said. Twisted Evil

8. The new question/quote:

"The more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war."

Choices:

A--United States Navy Admiral Hyman Rickover.

B--The often quoted Wink General Patton.

C--Author of The Art Of War and military thinker and theoretician the Chinese Sun Tzu.

D--The United States General "Black Jack" John Pershing.

E--The Roman general and Magister Militum Flavius Stilicho.

F--The always ubiquitous, and big--mouthed, Richardus Burtonus.

Decide. Don't cheat. Or Freddie *The Flower flower * Farquarwill haunt your dreams.

*See* you military minded peeps when I get back from Montana.......or when--if--I can get on a computer there. Neutral Even if I can score some time on a computer I may not post the answer until I get back. Evil or Very Mad

One I actually know.

Sun Tzu. But since everyone already said that, it's not impressive.

It reminds me of the character The Sphinx in the movie Mystery Men.

Anyone seen it?? Anyway, here are some of his lines, many like this, and Ben Stiller's character even begins to question his babble later on...

"Before you can learn to train, I must train you to learn".

"Those who fail to plan, plan to fail".

"We are number one. All others are number two, or lower".

"You must lash out with every limb, like the octopus who plays the drums."

"He who questions training only trains himself at asking questions".

"You must be like wolf pack, not six-pack".

"When you can balance a tack hammer on your head, you can head off your foes with a balanced attack".

"When you care what is outside, what is inside cares for you".

lol!

Okay, that's Enough.

Points:

1. lol! lol! lol! lol! @ the post above by L8T.

That is great. Razz Razz

2. So......we have L8T, Black Rider, Mr.Electric, and Intrigued1 all saying it was Sun Tzu. (AHHHHH--SSOOOOOOO)

3. Before I tell you the answer (whether you are all right or wrong) I want to say something, and I mean it sincerely.

I wish to thank each and every one of you for not cheating and looking these quotation answers up......as you could each do.....easily. It is more fun for me to see you guys using strategy (thinking about the order of my choices), and even more strategy and thought in how each choice sounds like *such and such* or *so and so*......guys, it is just fun to see your brains *clicking and whirring* as you think about the choices here on the thread. Thanks. Smile Smile

4. That said......the answer will come sooner than later. Others?? Question
