| But you have showed up enough to leave an odor. This was the army of Cumberland (us) vs. the army of Tennessee (cs) and the commanders were Rosecrans of the north and Bragg of the south. Bragg was bent on reoccuping Chattanooga and decided to meet a part of Rosecrans’s army, defeat them, and then move back into the city. On the 17th he headed north, intending to meet the northern forces. As Bragg marched north on the 18th, his cavalry and infantry fought with Union cavalry and mounted infantry which were armed with Spencer repeating rifles. Fighting began heavily early on the 19th, and Bragg’s men hammered the union line but couldn't break it. The next day, Bragg continued his assault on the Union line on the left, and in late morning, Rosecrans was told that he had a gap in his line. In moving units to shore up the supposed gap, Rosencrans created one, and James Longstreet’s men promptly exploited it, driving one-third of the Union army, including Rosecrans himself, from the field. George H. Thomas took over command and began consolidating forces on Horseshoe Ridge and Snodgrass Hill. The south pounded these areas but did not break them and at dark Thomas just abandoned the field moving into Chattanooga. Interesting side item. The Spencer repeating rifle had much to do with the north winning this war. _________________ I don't have time for all if it, so I pick my battles. | The south had nothing like it and though they captured some they couldn't manufacure the ammunition to really make them useful. _________________ I don't have time for all if it, so I pick my battles. | George Thomas, the Rock of Chickamauga. He always seems like the most underated general of the Civil War. He turned in victories while many Union Generals did not. Perhaps his lack of notariety was due to his Southern heritage, having been born in Virginia. Unlike others he did not betray his country. Northerners never fully trusted him because of his Southern roots. Southerners (especially his own family) vilified him for not coming home. |

| George Thomas was indeed underrated. He made the March to the Sea possible because Sherman was able to trust him to hold Nashville, which he did in probably the most lopsided battle in the war...the Battle of Nashville. |

| Can I just get extra credit for taking and posting a photo of a local monument dedicated to the local soldiers that fought at Chickamauga????? Any extra-extra credit for swimming down by the Chickamauga Damn (as a teen, which, I think, was part of the WPA, which, was part of the New Deal........Seems pertinent to today's political discussion..........(I am an idiot looking for free-extra credit, just ignore me, If You Can)....??? This battle was about 2 months before the Battle In The Clouds, which, is the ONLY book that I have read about a Civil war battle..... It is very beautiful country in that southern Tenn./north-west corner of Georgia!! And, very hilly, small mountains, etc....... Much carnage in this battle for Chickamauga....The South won, but, it was a fairly hollow victory, cause'....Grant moved into the region soon after, and took back Chattanooga...... The "prostitute" ( ) general soon becomes more prominent........ . I hadn't heard the part about the Spencer rifles, but, it makes sense....the North had the factories, and what, today, we might call "the technology"..... _________________ I'm not going to taste you to verify if you have bad taste or not, but let's just say I strongly suspect that you do.

The South got a few. Not enough to really do anything positive for the grey.

Yeah.....I like Thomas a lot. Badassed leader.

That was about it.
Oh and BTW Thomas had a lot of notoriety in the South. 4. FOJ said:

5. That was very good men. Especially Black Rider's post.
I'll not add much to that except the days Black Rider mentioned were in 1863. The battle was fought in Tennessee. Black Rider provided a nice little encapsulation of the battle, enough.
6. New battle:
The Battle Of Manzikert (truly very famous)
"The following applies to all of my battles named. Please tell me the following about The Battle Of Manzikert: Where was it fought, when was it fought, who were the commanders and troop nationalities/troop names of the two opposing sides, who was the winner of the engagement, and for extra credit and valuable points redeemable at a *Barack Obama Cooking With The Stars* school near you......please give me a little bit of info about the battle; this is your chance to *strut your stuff*, so to speak." EDIT: I had to go into this twice and correct mistakes. I'm tired.

| I don't know much about the Byzantines. Except... for the 2nd time in this thread I make reference to the 50's pop group the 4 Lads and their great old hit "Istanbul, (not Constantinople.)" "Istanbul was Constantinople Now it's Istanbul not Constantinople Been a long time gone Old Constantinople's still has Turkish delight On a moonlight night" That was a very catchy tune. |
