| | Quote: | | The first time I was exposed to Gibbons was in 1971 or 1972 |
Well GW, I asked because in Francis Shaeffer's book How Should We Then Live he quotes or paraphrases Gibbons:
Edward Gibbon in his "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" said that the following five attributes marked Rome at its end: 1st A mounting love of show and luxury, 2nd A widening gap between the very rich and the very poor, 3rd An obsession with sex, 4th Freakishness in the arts, masquerading as originality, and enthusiasms pretending to be creativity, 5th An increased desire to live off the state.
So, after reading this book twice, I gave thought to reading Gibbons....then, I woke up after seeing how large a body of work they are.
That quote, "Freakishness in the arts, masquerading as originality, and enthusiasms pretending to be creativity" is my very favorite Shaeffer qoute. _________________ I'm not going to taste you to verify if you have bad taste or not, but let's just say I strongly suspect that you do.

| What you've quoted there from Schaeffer: | Quote: | | Edward Gibbon in his "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" said that the following five attributes marked Rome at its end: 1st A mounting love of show and luxury, 2nd A widening gap between the very rich and the very poor, 3rd An obsession with sex, 4th Freakishness in the arts, masquerading as originality, and enthusiasms pretending to be creativity, 5th An increased desire to live off the state. |
*Rings a bell*, eh?? Bingo......to all of it. My two very favorite Christian authors are Francis Schaeffer and Arthur Custance. The knowledge and wisdom GOD blessed them with...... Wow. Back to Schaeffer and what you've quoted......the parallels between the later Roman Empire and its downfall in the West, the half based out of Rome, remember the Eastern half based out of Constantinople lasted for another thousand years......those parallels between the Western Roman Empire and contemporary America are......troubling, to say the least. And.....my question still stands: "If you were a Roman soldier......a legionary or cavalryman......would you want to wear a sporran, or could and would you rather do without it??
In a sentence or two, give your answer and reasoning for it.
Then I will tell you how I would answer. " _________________ "The 'farce' is strong with Sith Lord Obama-Wan." words of Scourge.

Those are pugio. Daggers. Kinda' short, but they do the job. Cutting.
O.K. this is a sporran. First, I am going to talk about the picture and then show it. This is a picture of the military style of belt worn by a Roman soldier, either legionary or cavalryman. It is referred to, usually, as a cingulum. That term is somewhat of a modern term to refer to something the Latins simply referred to as a balteus.
On the black leather balteus are a series of embossed brass plates which have the pictures of different Roman Emperors on them. The pugio and scabbard for the pugio are of a standard Roman pattern blade and scabbard. Finally, to the left of the pugio and its scabbard is the sporran.
The sporran was a groin protector. It is composed of leather strips that hang down from the balteus. These leather strips are covered with the brass circular discs that you see. At the very bottom of the sporran are the brass fittings that give 'weight' to the sporran and help it to stay down in front of the soldier's groin area. I made a comment about wearing a "double sporran" in a post above, where I was mimicking Linus' anger. In reality, however, it was occasionally documented where a Roman soldier would have two sporran hanging from his balteus, one over the other. Heh, if I were in the Roman Army, I would wear two sporran over my groin if I could get away with it.
The balteus (or cingulum), pugio and scabbard, and sporran, all with brass embossed plates:

| "Harumph!!" I had to answer my own question about the sporran. "Harumph!!" Here is the next question about the Roman Army: What were the Legion identification numbers of the three Legions lost in the Teutoburger Wald?? And for bonus points (valuable in winning a polka compilation CD) what did the, then......at that time of the Battle of the Teutoburger Wald, Roman Emperor say when he was told of the three Legions' destruction?? _________________ "The 'farce' is strong with Sith Lord Obama-Wan." words of Scourge.
