| ...AVG, Nortons, McAfee, etc.? I am seriously considering just dumping AVG Professional, as I have been told by multiple computer-using friends that they have never had any problems with the Vista version of Defender. Opinions? Thoughts? Arttie _________________ Constitutional separation of church and state is a lie; it is a figment of the secular-progressive's imagination.

| Defender misses a lot. I also dumped AVG as it took up too much memory to run. I switched to Avast and have been happy ever since. _________________ "I have no desire to speak w/other tongues, I already do enough damage w/the one I have!!" - Candlemass |

| I got tired of AVG slowing things down. Norton gets a high rating and is doing the job. I want to see Defender more before I use it. _________________ I don't have time for all if it, so I pick my battles. | Is Avast free or at least cost-effective? Arttie _________________ Constitutional separation of church and state is a lie; it is a figment of the secular-progressive's imagination.

| Defender is defenseless. I seldom go anywhere on the net except for 3 message boards, ESPN and the Cardinals web site yet Defender let a trojan horse through last spring. Since I got AVG, Ad Aware and Spybot, I haven't had any trouble. _________________ "The banner of loud and rebellious music will never die. It just gets older." - GODSWIZARD

| There is a free version of Avast, Arttie. With Avast, Ad Aware, and Spybot, I keep my machine running well. I would also ad CCleaner (another freebie) to get rid of cookies and also do some restoration work on your system's registry. Free works for me! _________________ "I have no desire to speak w/other tongues, I already do enough damage w/the one I have!!" - Candlemass |

| Toho...I currently run AVG pro, but it just bogs my machine down so much when it is scanning...plus, it is annoyingly slow at allowing me to get onto the 'Net the first time I fire up every day, as it tries to detect network settings, etc. Arttie _________________ Constitutional separation of church and state is a lie; it is a figment of the secular-progressive's imagination.

| I just have the free version of AVG and in combination with Ad Aware and Spybot, it seems to be working. I made the mistake of not loading any anti-malware before because I thought with the limited sites I hit on the net, Defender was enough. It wasn't. _________________ "The banner of loud and rebellious music will never die. It just gets older." - GODSWIZARD

| That's kind of what I am afraid of, especially since I am all over the 'Net. Arttie _________________ Constitutional separation of church and state is a lie; it is a figment of the secular-progressive's imagination.

| I run the free avast and Malwarebytes. I clean the registry with CCleaner and Eusing Free registry cleaner. I also use Deffragler and a special uninstaller/clean-up program. Every single one of these is free and is regularly updated. Never had any serious problems on my Vista OS. _________________ KingsRite

| Like others, I'll say forget Windows "Defender," as it catches less than a third of what's out there. If you want maximum virus protection, go with Avast! home edition. You will also want to consider downloading Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad Aware, and Spyware Blaster (which in essence inoculates your computer against viruses). |

| In addition, Arrtie, what browser do you use? If you're using I.E... you're leaving yourself WAY more vulnerable. |

| Don't forget, Microsoft killed off Windows OneCare, and replaced it with their FREE "Microsoft Security Essentials" Google that and you can get it right from MS. It is Free and has very good protection. Also uses low resources. If you ever do get infected. Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, and in real bad casses Combofix are your best friends. |

| Interesting, Stryperman... Does that MS program come with a firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware? Arttie _________________ Constitutional separation of church and state is a lie; it is a figment of the secular-progressive's imagination.

| Thanks for the 411 folks... I've been wondering lately about a safe free registry cleaner. Anyone care to explain why IE is more open to viruses... if they know? _________________ only symbols can be twisted ,burned, spat on etc.NOTHING truly Holy can be desecrated..... - Sabbath Steve
