I can't even hear this guys name without wanting turn him inside out. As well as every other Hell-spawn low life in his "church".

There is no doubt this guy is a wack job, but I think we have to be careful in our condemnation of him and others like him. We have a proclivity w/in ourselves to be a little like him, when we eschew others who are not of our denomination or do not adhere to our doctrinal positions. I've seen it here and in myslef, we can also look at Fred and say, "hey, at least I ain't that bad." That church that is burning "Satan's Bibles" is very close to the Spirit of Fred, may we all move as far as possible from "Fred!"

...very true, my friend, but I myself cannot recall a time when I ever said "Thank God for dead shoppers", or anything similar to that...which they did almost the same hour the news hit of the shooting massacre at Westroads Mall in Omaha (my neck of the metaphorical woods)...truly I pray for grace...

Good word candle. I feel sorry for those who follow him, many who probably are very needy and find a sense of belonging there. I do think they distort the scripture and that needs to be pointed out.

We've disagreed on a lot, Candy, but here I truly say AMEN! It's easy to condemn Phelps for the things he does, and indeed, the things he does deserve NOTHING but condemnation, but are we not as in the wrong as he to condemn him and those who follow him? Shouldn't we be praying that God gets to their hearts as He got to ours?

I have a lot of material by Steve Brown, love the guy, he once said; "I love the "name it claim it guys", however I think that teaching is dangerous and will ruin your life so I'm going to warn you about it....but My battle is not w/them, it's w/me."

I find I like to condemn the Benny Hinns of the world, why? Cause it makes me feel better about myself, keeps me from dealing w/my own stuff.

I cannot stand Fred Phelps. He makes me sick. I cannot understand why this man is so hateful. It truly bothers me that because of him and people like him, a lot of people associate Christianity based on the things he has said and done.

Right. Very few, if any of the WBC members are outsiders. All of them are descendants of Fred Phelps, and most of them are either lawyers or are training to be such. It's a religion of legalism.

Candlemass is right. We have all been "Fred Phelps" at one time or another. Lord, help us just to surrender to You.

Ive never picketed a funeral becuase I didnt like the deceased, or said that bushfire victims deserved to die because they are somehow associated with homosexuals who live 900 kms away. We all fail in some way, but Ive never been like Fred Phelps.

Wasn't it the pharisees who would stand on the street corner saying, "Thank God I'm not like that (*insert sinner here*)"

You miss the point, Shadow. It's not in the actions of protesting, but in the attitude of self-righteousness, of condemnation of the individual. Romans tells us that there is therefore now NO condemnation for those who are in Christ.

HE does not judge or condemn us (though He has every right!), and yes, we deserve it. So who are we, imperfect, stupid, rebellious sheep to stand in judgment of others for their wrongs? Shouldn't we be focusing on loving them as Christ does?

Not to mention that he's giving Baptists a bad name. My Aunt enrolled her daughter into a Baptist school that removed the "Baptist" from the name just because of Fred Phelps. And this was in New Hampshire!

the point being that sin and being fallen don't exactly hold various ranks......sin is sin, and but for the grace of Christ, we would ALL be condemned for it.

yeah, I'd agree that most people are "better people" than Fed Phelps....but at the end of the day, when we face out Creator, that's irrelevant.
