Or being an anal fan. Most people won't give that much thought about what they are seeing. From the cartoons, most of the characters appeared to be around the same age. To draw in a younger, newer audience, more youthful looking actors will be needed. That's commonly known as marketing.

I seriously doubt that the movie will interest a younger audience as much as it will people who grew up with the comic books, toys & cartoons in the 1980s. In order for the movie to have some sense of believability, meaning that the characters are old enough to be experts in their respective fields, there should be no one younger than 30 years old in the cast. Scarlett didn't just look pretty and shoot her crossbow, she trained most of the other Joes how to fight and use their weapons. In order to reach the level where someone is training others means that there's a reasonable difference in both age and experience. The only Joe who was a better fighter than Scarlett was Snake Eyes. Tell me, how does a girl who looks like she just came from her senior prom pass for a weapons 'specialist'? The term 'specialist' denotes a significant period of trainiing, experience and seasoning. That's the problem with movies like this. The casting directors throw out any modicum of realism in favor of an excuse to string together a garland of mindless fight scenes. Viewers are much more intelligent nowadays than they were in the A-Team/ Knight Rider days of the 1980s.

Wel, the only problem I see with the casting so far is that they got Zartan and Destro ass backwards, from a cosmetics standpoint...........

I don't think so. Having seen both of those gentlemen act, those should prove to be two of the best casting decisions. I'm especially expecting Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy Returns, 24) to kick ass as Zartan. I can totally see him in that role.

This thing will end up being another mass marketing machine for the TOY LINE just like the Transformers flick was (IE:lots of "blow smurf up", not so much plot exposition)....and I'm fine with that. It's not like the cartoons were cinematic excellence, either........so long as we get one of those "and knowledge is half the battle" bits after the credits run, I'm good Wink

I think you'll be surprised at the fanbase this will get. I know my son is excited about the concept, because HE has GI JOE toys from the modern run as WELL as mine from back in the day, and both the GI JOE "Spy Troops" and "Valor vs Venom" DVDs that accompanied this modern run of toys.

Don't ever forget, this is targetted to TWO audiences...us "old timers" from the 80's.....and our KIDS. They're also counting on the movie appealing to the KIDS, and the kids getting the adults that are "on the edge" interested in it.....and young teenager's don't generally believe that a bunch of 35 year old's are a group of badass commando types.

I actually think they've got a LOT of the casting RIGHT, myself.

SCARLETT

DUKE (pic from the guy's current movie, Stop Loss, NOT GI Joe set!)

The actress playing Scarlett (Rachel Nichols), isn't "prom queen" age.....she's 28, as is the guy playing Duke(Channing Tatum). Those two characters hold rank of Master Seargant...they're PLENTY old enough. Heck, the actors portraying them would have 10 year of military experience, had they enlisted at 18, by this point. Throw on some magic movie makeup, and some high intensity training (the guy playing Duke already has belts in 2 styles of Kung Fu, apparently)...they'll be more than workeable in the roles.

BARONESS

Sienna Miller (as the Baroness) is 26. Toss a dye job on her, and she'll be PERFECT in the role of hot, sultry villainess (and Destro's GF).

Joseph Gordon Levitt (Tommy Solomon, 3rd Rock From the Sun) as Cobra Commander is an...interesting...choice, but again, he's old enough to be on the younger end of the original group of fans...and if they hold true to ANYTHING in the mythos, he'll be behind a helmet or face mask ANYWAY, ending up more of a voice actor.

There were guys here and there who were NOTICEABLY older than the rest of the crew, like Gung Ho, and Roadblock...but they haven't been cast, and might not be appearing. The ONLY Joe that was NOTICEABLY older that HAS been cast was General Hawk, with Dennis Quaid, who is....noticeably older than the rest of the cast.

HAWK (again, NOT from set..different movie)

The "age" thing is much ado about nothing.........

It's also possible that they couldn't fill all the roles with exactly who they wanted and had to settle for a few second choices. Personally, my #1 choice for Duke would've been character actor, Neal McDonough.

I dont see any way around this fact. It is a G.I.Joe action film based on the comic and toy characters. There is NO way around it. This will be a B movie....not that there is anything wrong with that. I love B movies!

The point is that there's no excuse for GI Joe to be a B-Flick. The producers have got over 25 years of material from the comics and a plethora of extremely well-developed characters to work with. You've got the same mindset as Tim Story who directed both Fantastic Four movies. What you and several Hollywood directors fail to realize is that fans are sick and tired of seeing characters that they know and love being used as fodder for making campy shlock, especially since comics moved away from shlock in the mid 1970s.

I think you SEVERELY overestimate exactly how many of this type of "fan" are actually out there. MOST guys our age aren't even aware that GI Joe continued on in comics after '93. They've got NO CLUE there even IS a Dark Horse era................the "serious fan" group may SOUND loud, but in actuality, its a VERY tiny overall segment of the people that this film is going to be aimed at.

This is something that half the marketing (much like Transformers before it) will occur in people's heads, as a "nostalgia" factor thing. They'll go "GI Joe? COOL! I remember that from when I was a kid.....", and THAT is what will propel the bulk of the appeal from this movie.

I know that those types of 'fans' are a larger segment than that of those who read the comics. Just because nostalgia will inevitably play a role in the success of the movie doesn't mean that the dialogue needs to be poor or the acting half-assed. The original Star Wars Trilogy is the ultimate example of nostalgia for many people, fanatics and more casual viewers alike. Did George Lucas set out to create B-Flicks? No way! No thought went into the dialogue for either of the Fantastic Four movies or the Transformers. Do we really need GI Joe or Thundercats to follow in their footsteps and continue a disgraceful trend in American filmmaking?

WEll, Scourge, if you take off the rose colored glasses, you'd realize that the dialogue in the comics and cartoons of the 80's isn't exactly genius level work, either.

Yeah, there are btis and pieces thruought the timeframe that were
wonderfully done, like the interplay between Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow,
and the Arishakage ninja clan. And the way the mysteries of how Snake Eyes became Snake eyes is second only to the mythos of Wolverine's origin as far as shrouds of secrecy and confusion go.

BUT

There's also a WHOLE LOT of far fetched, lowbrow plotlines that it sure seems like you are just sweeping under the rug.....

The way the ENTIRE town of Springfield beign a front for COBRA in the US.....

All the shennanigans surrounding Serpentor, COBRA-La, and the inclusion of animal/human DNA hybrid warriors. I mean, they had guys where the lower half of their body was a freaking snake tail for Pete's sake!

Dusty being captured by COBRA, and being forced to fight in a gladatorial pit, which is being filled with water and piranha whie he fights.....

The sheer amount of funding and equipment COBRA has, along with the overall size of their organization.....

Dr. Mindbender.

HEck, even Zartan and his color changing skin qualify as out and out shlock......

It's there in SPADES, bro. It wasn't Shakespeare or Chaucer......it was more like "A Kinght's Tale"..........

You DO realize that LArry Hama himself is a creative consultant on this, right?

And THIS is exactly the type of "fan" the movie will get. We'll go see it because it's a freaking live action GI Joe movie! Frankly, we're not actually concerned with whether or not Duke and Scarlett are having an Oscar worthy dialogue exchange. There will be exoplosions, and martial arts, and badass vehicles, just like we remember from our youths....and THATS all that really matters.

I'm not looking for Oscar-worthy material, just a movie that shows the studio actually CARES about the franchise. I'm looking for a labor of love just like Batman Begins. I know that large portions of the GI Joe storyline were/are far-fetched and that the dialogue won't win the Nobel prize for literature any time soon. That's why it's fiction. But just look at the care and attention given to the X-Men movies versus the Fantastic Four movies. They're apples and oranges in terms of overall quality on every level. The creators of the FF movies have been very sloppy thusfar. Yet, the X-Men movies were given much more care and attention. That's what I'm talking about.

Allow me to quote myself here.........

Also, the produicer is on record stating that if the original cartoons are the 1989 Batman movie, then the movie will be like Batman Begins.......

I think you can relax a little bit about the "quality" thing.........

Works for me! Yo, Joe!

And, it if was, very few action movie fans would bother to go see it. Just blow something up and kick somebody's sorry butt, for cryin' out loud!

I think I said it before: Yo, Joe!

One element i'd love to see (though theyd have to save it for the sequel probably) would be Extensive Enterprises (run by tomax and xamot) being a front for Cobra. Of course, there are very few (if any) identical twins involved in Hollywood.

Here is the first photo of Scarlett. I'm a bit disappointed in this one for some reason.
