PostSubject: Fired for having a God Pin!   Wed Oct 28, 2009 3:46 pm

Anyone else following this story besides me? It is all over the internet. One place you will not find it is Facebook. I just tired to befriend this guy who is standing up for God and Country and my request was denied and the guy has had his facebook page both his personal and his supporters page taken down. His name is Trevor Keezer and he was told he was fired because his Pin on his smock was outside of the company dress code. He says he wore the pin for over a year with no trouble what so ever, but about a month ago started having a lunch time Bible Study and again was told to remove the Pin. He refused and he was fired that day. This appear to be him being fired for his Bible and not really the Pin!

The Fight is on!

don't believe everything you read on the internet, ESPECIALLY when there is a big to-do about it.

I've also got a HUGE objection to the slant of this thread title, because that's absolutely NOT why the guy got canned. The reason he's no longer employed by said company is a willful, defiant violation of company policy.

The entire situation depends on whether or not the pin was noticed and ignored, or if his superiors really didn't realize until it was called to their attention. That's really all the "over a year" part means.

Once called to their attention, his superiors had no choice other than to deal with the violation of policy. Length of time is actually fairly irrelevant to that.

If there is a clearly spelled out company policy prohibiting the display of religious paraphenalia (this is usually because a corporate entity does not wish to be seen as endorsing a religion, and display by their employees of such things while on company time or grounds can be seen as such), then

1) Mr Keever never should have put the pin on in the first place. Attaching it to his smock in the first place was a direct, and perhaps deliberate, violation of company policy.

2) once informed he was in violaton of the company dress policy, it was, in fact, a requirement for continued employment to comply with said policy, or seek other employment, no different than any OTHER "personal appearance" issue.

3) If the lunch time Bible Study (the implication I get is that thsi was NOT "personal devotional time", but a group meeting) was happening on company grounds, then it TOO could well have been a violation of company policy (again, the company has it's own "rights" as far as whether or not it wishes to be seen as "endorsing" a religion, which, by allowing this to take place on Company grounds, it could have been seen as doing).

It's a pretty straight forward thing, and until I see further details from ALL parties involved come out, I'm not about to buy in on the "religious persecution" front. It's entirely possible that if Mr. Keever had displayed a little common sense, rather than getting his back up about it, he'd still be employed and able to witness to his co-workers thru his personal actions.

Instead, he's decided to try and play the martyr, and I'm not buying what he's selling....

We had this same discussion over at RI and I agree with Exo.

Like this guy, I work for a company with a specific dress code (no jeans, no visible tattoes, no earrings for men, etc.)

My first year working here, we had a "casual day" and I asked my boss if I could wear an earring that day. She consulted the personnel handbook and there wasn't anything specifically banning male earrings on casual days. So I wore a cubic zirconia earring and waltzed passed HR personnel.

I was told to remove my earring. No biggie. I did as I was asked.

This guy chose not to. Fine, you don't want to adhere to your employer's dress policy? Good luck finding a new employer.

My main objection to the way the various articles I've seen written about this incident is that they portray Home Depot as a God-hating company. Bull! They just don't want to have to deal with the small-minded moron customer who's going to claim to be offended by an employee's personal religious demonstration so they just banned all religious buttons.

IMO, this only becomes "banning God" when the HD employee with the button that says "In Allah We Trust" is allowed to wear it while this guy got fired. Until then I consider this a simple act of an employee's refusal to conform to the employer's stated policies.

Oh yeah, and the Personnel Handbook at my job now explicitly states that earrings are forbidden for males. Period. My little contribution to posterity.

That's better than getting set on fire for having a GOD pin.

All those in position of authority over us are put there by God so we are to be respectful and do what we're told as employees. I feel that Home Depot was in the right for firing Mr. Keezer for refusing to remove his pin, that is a bad witness. It wasn't like he was being asked to renounce his faith, only to remove his pin.

It's interesting to note that the apostle Paul, in the book of Romans told us to be obedient to the laws of the land and yet he was being persecuted under Ceasar Nero, who ruthlessly persecuted Christians and under whose ruling Paul was beheaded.

Let me ask you this, If it was an I love Allah pin would you even be raising this issue? I live in America......And I live in Florida. It is a right to fire state......You can be fired for any reason other than race/sexual orintation that your boss feels like. Thats how it should be. If the rules state no religious pins well then he deserves to get fired.......Oh with no uneployment as far as Im concerned. This was a rebelous act and Im sure God didnt approve. Oh Im a rebel also but my family comes first and they need to eat and have a place to live so I guess if my boss said no religious pins guess what.....no pin.

If the company cut him slack for a while but then decided to enforce the policy, it's their right to do so. The guy wasn't fired for wearing the pin, he was fired for refusing to abide by the company's rules.

My guess is that it wasn't a problem until another worker was offended by it and threatened to start wearing things to express their views-- and rather than letting an ideology war start, the company decided it was time to start enforcing the policy.

The phrase on the pin is actually a line from the Pledge of Allegiance, and he wears it in honor of his brother who is serving in the Armed Forces, who is going back to Iraq for a second tour of duty.

If this were a Jew and he were told to remove his Star of David would they be able to just say "well, those are just the rules."?

Does the business have the "right" to forbid this guy from wearing a phrase that school children repeat on a daily basis in the public schools?

Even if they have the "legal right" to do that, it makes it appear that this business has no common sense whatsoever.

Catholics, Jews, Protestants, Mormons, etc. all say the exact same Pledge of Allegiance, so what is the big deal if the guy wears a patriotic pin for his brother, with a phrase everyone knows so well? Can they also fire you if you refuse to get a tatoo removed?

This point is THE point!

It was not a religious pin. It was merely a line from our Pledge. I can see the whole 'dress code policy' view, but at the same time, I feel it was unjust persecution against the guy.

It's funny that nothing happened until he started bringing his Bible to work to read ON HIS OWN TIME at lunch. Also, please note that he also wore a yellow ribbon for the troops, something that is not 'approved' dress code wear, and was not rebuked for that. My thought is that it was because it doesn't say anything about God on it.

With as much respect as I can muster...do you realize how insane that sounds??

Metalheads do run with the tendency to be rebellious, to be sure...

However, Christians are taught to be submissive to the authorities, since we understand the gov't of our world sits on the shoulders of our Saviour and we are to give glory to Him in everything we do.

We are taught to do all we can to preserve the bond of peace and we have wisdom available to pick and choose our battles.

So, one has to decide ..are they a metalhead or a Christian first?

Also, aside from either of those distinctions... full grown adult people who need to be employed have to decide if they want to be a whining doofus about something that is very tokenistic (imo) or.... be smart and stay employed.

There are plenty of places, at least where I'm at, where people can now have all kinds of facial piercings and earlobe stretchy things going on and still serve me food or ring upp my purchase in a bigg chain store.

When I worked for some of the same/similar places, I had to hide my nose ring while it healed. People could wear one religious pendant on a necklace (of whatever kind) but it had to be worn under the uniform. The owner of this one particular company was a Christian so I don't think he laid it out that way to persecute anyone. Some jobbs make certain stipulations about jewelry, clothing and hair length because of equipment they will be using and the safety concerns/liability that can arise and this was the reasoning here.

........ HD has plenty of situations that I can see where extra stuff hanging off you could be a potential and easily avoidable hazard.

And since we are on this subject, what the heck is wrong with having a Bible study at your own house, off work hours?? Why is it sometimes that people end upp acting as though all that matters is their (often innacurate) sense of persecution??

How about give your boss your full attention and effort while you're on the clock, serving him or her as unto the Lord, like the Bible says and save your personal and political kneejerking for your own time? How about manners? How about what is fair and right? How about giving God some glory that way ??

And a lot of jobs won't allow you to wear metal shirts... There is dress codes you know. If the pin had a pentagram they would have done the same thing.

totally agree. If the policy applies to everyone uniformly (which it is a HD policy) and the person agrees to the policy by working there I dont see his argument at all. If he doesnt want to adhere to policy, find another place of employment that better suits your needs.

That's just it, though...he wasn't on the clock with his Bible, he was at lunch.

That said, I don't know what Home Depot's policy is concerning lunch breaks and whether they are paid breaks, or not. If he was on a paid lunch break, then technically he was still on company time while reading the Word.

Still a stupid reason to fire him, unless he was causing other trouble not mentioned in the article.

All the talk about him being justifiably fired for not obeying company policy is fine, but what about ethics of Home Depot? Surely the public and/or employees can say NO! to things that are ridiculous, right? Isn't there such a thing as change, anymore?

Whether you think it's stupid or not, that was Home Depot's policy and the employee refused to comply with that policy, so they had every right to fire. Bottom line, the employee was defiant.

Exactly.

I work in a cubicle farm populated by IT geeks and we NEVER even meet any customers. But the company has a policy of no jeans and your shirt must have a collar. Do I think it's a dumb dress code? Of course; in IT, we never meet the customer so why do we have to maintain the corporate "image"?

But do I defiantly come to work in a metal T shirt and jeans? Heck no because I know the company policy and choose to remain employed here. I choose to comply with the policy and I'm still here after 15 years. This guy chose not to comply and he got canned. You reap what you sow.
