Then the immeasurable hymn of Ocean I heard as it rose and fell
To its organ whose stops were the piping of gulls and the thunderous swell;
Heard the burden of the waters and the singing of the waves
Whose voices came on for ever and went rolling to the caves,
Where an endless fugue of echoes splashed against wet stone
And arose and mingled in unison into a murmuring drone -
'Twas a music of uttermost deepness that stirred in the profound,
And all the voices of all oceans were gathered to that sound;
'Twas Ylmir, Lord of Waters, with all-stilling hand that made
Unconquerable harmonies, that the roaring sea obeyed,
That its waters poured off and Earth heaved her glistening shoulders again
Naked up into the airs and cloudrifts and sea-going rain,
Till the suck and suck of green eddies and the slap of ripples was all
That reached to mine isléd stone, save the old unearthly call
Of sea-birds long-forgotten and the grating of ancient wings.

GW, I think it is actually impossible to be better than the books, because movies are limited by there own physicality. Our minds can see things in such a unique way that even if we could make exactly what we see, it would only be the right thing for us no one else. Therefore it is IMPOSSIBLE to make a movie as good as the book.

Spot on IMO. Twisted Evil

I agree with all of that post. cheers

I'm a fan as well, particularly of fantasy imagery based on Tolkien's work. I think the Hildebrandt brothers captured it especially well, and I was disappointed when Tim Hildebrandt passed away a couple years ago.

If you enjoy artwork like this for Tolkien's work, I recommend collecting the METW (Middle Earth: The Wizards) CCG cards. They were released by ICE in 1995. Sometimes a set shows up on eBay for $100 to $150, or singles and lots show up for various amounts. The artwork on every single card is impressive and features some top talent. Here are some scans of cards I picked arbitrarily from The Wizards (there were expansions, The Dragons, The Lidless Eye, I think maybe one more, but these scans are from The Wizards, limited edition--which means black bordered).

The first two images are the backs of the cards (with the map image being on the back of location cards).

And these are miscellaneous images, showcasing a few of the styles of art used in the set.

The One Ring was always the most valuable card, selling for $30 or more. Black Arrow was a rare promo card only available through a magazine, making it particularly valuable. Ah, collecting these cards... The memories.

Late to this thread too . . . the book Aragorn. Man he knew what he was about, who he was, so sure and confident. He's the king!

Also really love the character of Samwise. What a humble and valiant guy. Content to be in the shadows while Frodo and the others were in the limelight. Yet he was a ring-bearer too, the only one since Bilbo to give up the ring voluntarily.

- opinions on Samwise going to Valinor when he is quite old?
