Surprised The story in the Ft worth paper didn't go into a lot of detail, but it seems this is what is coming next in the world of Christian fiction.maybe someone else here has heard the story and has more details. Some guy, think his name was Wilson, has an idea involving the blood of Judas and vampires springing from it.It didn't make it clear if the good guys were vampires or if they were slayers, which would be cool. That sounds like kind of a unique idea though it might be marketed better under another tag than Christian fiction.I would think it would be better to just go with it like Tyrant(US) did or like Cage does with their fantasy/spiritual lyrics,it is what it is,no label needed.

Sleep The other thing mentioned sounds basically like a Christian version of Twilight, could you possibly come across any more desperate sounding, or jumping on the bandwagon with that idea?

I had wondered if any Christian black metal bands were ever going to push the boundary and play off that imagery, with all the makeup and looking "dead" to begin with.Blood drinkers, that kind of concept, don't think anyone has ,though they might now.

Curious as to other people's opinions and thoughts about the books..........

I saw a guy on some talk show many years ago (possibly Ricki Lake or Sara Jesse Raphael) who claimed to be a Christian and a vampire. He said something to the effect of, "We Christians drink the blood of Christ."

In ten seconds that guy made a lot of people laugh at Christianity. It was absolutely ridiculous, and it would have been laughable had it not been such a pathetic attempt to justify his weird lifestyle.

Yeah, like I said the first idea is kind of interesting, would make an interesting movie maybe, but the second just smacks of corporate "Christian" thinking, like latte's in church and "mystery worshippers" that grade churches.Christian metal tried that sort of approach years ago and the only time IMHO that it worked was when the bands were sincere fans of the bands they sounded like,Rose, for example,Randy had no problem telling you he was both a Sabbath and a Doors fan.

My niece is into Twilight and since it was her birthday,we sat through (most of it),everybody ended up getting sleepy and went to bed.It is obvious that part of the appeal is the hormonal aspect.I could see a vampire slayer kind of thing, the bodies in question would already be dead anyway, can't be murder,so that would work, or possessed by demons and then maybe delivered from it,something like that.

I don't know though, seems like the modern "Christian" entertainment industry is willing to do whatever it takes to match some things, and like the "mystery worshipper thing, makes me wonder just how much "about the numbers" as opposed to actual ministry, is involved in it ?

You're talking about Eric Wilson and his trilogy, The Jerusalem Undead. The first book, Field of Blood, was released last year. The second part, Haunt of Jackals, comes out next month. The third and final part will be released in 2010.

I really get tired of having a Christian "alternative" to everything. Why not come up with an original plotline and write your own book instead of trying to come up with a thinly veiled pastiche of whatever the flavor of the month is in the secular publishing world?

BAH!
...the horror genre, and vampire tales in general, are something I am a great advocate of talented Christian writers to get involved with...the imagery and potential metaphors alone, along with the strong "good vs. evil" themes are ripe for fantastic yarns to get people talking about spiritual issues...

Agreed. I've written a few vampire tales myself. It's just that if it is done as a deliberate imitation of a current trend, like Twilight, it comes off as (and is) cheap commercialism. The gospel deserves better.

See my previous post, Tyrion. EW takes us all back to the Bible and how Judas Iscariot could provide the impetus of the true vampiric phenomenon.

If anything, "writers" like Stephanie Myers are the hacks here. Rolling Eyes

Ehhhh... I know what you are saying, but it would have more weight if he had written it before Twilight got so big.

Understand, I've not read either, so I cannot comment on them as books or make comparisons. I'm not saying that one series is better than another, only that the timing makes it seem like bandwagon jumping. I've heard of good horror writers deliberately avoiding the vampire motif right now because of it.

It has nothing to do with "bandwagon jumping." Wilson started this series BEFORE Twilight started catching fire, back in '06 or so (the rough draft stuff).

Truth be told, I always thought that the oringinal Dracula had some Christian tones to it. Holy water, crosses, etc...

Dracula being a favourite of the Church (Vlad was declared champion of Christ by the Pope of the time due to his fighting off the Ottomans), falling to evil and corrupting the innocent.

I've never read the Twilight books or watched/intend to watch the movies though, so I've got nothing on that.

BAH!
...not that I'm trying to imply anything, but I find it interesting that Stephenie Meyer is Mormon, and writes primarily in the supernatural fiction genre (she has other novels out besides the Twilight series)...

...listen, I've been writing short stories since I got my first typewriter when I was 15 (yeah, bit of an odd one in high school, there)...most of which fall under the "weird fiction" category...my faith in Christ and personal Christian philosophy saturates them, yes, but mostly in subtle ways...right now, I'm into the whole Supernatural Noir thing, with short stories involving a grizzled investigator in a world where vampires and other supernatural-based beings are full citizens of the United States (yeah, it's been done, I know; I was inspired by the first six Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series back in 2003, and Swamp Thing [vol. 2] #152)...and yes, it's based in Omaha, NE...

I figured someone on here would know what the article was talking about,I only got to skim over it in the breakroom at work so I couldn't remember his first name.

The other thing mentioned though just sounds like a ripoff,as TT said, create your own ideas and your own concepts,Wilsons concept is definitely original sounding.
