That is not entirely true. I remember from my studies of Middle and Old English (anglo saxon).. that the "y" for example in "yee" or "ye".. actual came from the anglo saxon "thorn" rune... which I woudl type to show.. but that "letter" is not on any modern keyboard. ( looks like a P but with a longer stem). Anyways it was pronouces with the "th" sound.. but when used for "The"... "(P)e" was pronounced "th-ee" as in Th(ea)tre.

Similiarily.. later on withthe use of "yee" or "ye".. it was still pronounced as "thee" as in "th(ea)tre".

You will also notice that even in modern times it is pronounced this way in "the King's English".. as you might here in Oxford.

Anyways.. no one probably cares.

(below.. the "letter" rune used in Old English for "th", called "thorn")
