| | Awesome Dali painting! I came back to look at this thread and it just hit me I was looking at a Dali painting. I have a copy of his Last Supper painting hanging up in my room. Thats another really trippy one if ya can find it. I have another one by Dali of the crucifixtion that I got off of ebay. I'd have to say that Dali and Bosch are probably two of my favorite artists ever. |

| Ok, maybe I'm just too close minded, but I just really don't see "art" when I look at this. It's surreal, and there are some nice usages of colors. But, the overall picture TO ME is ugly and uninviting. A velvet Elvis is more inviting.
OK, bash away. I just am not an art appreciator. Where's my "Dogs Playing Poker" print? _________________

I think compositionally speaking it's very well constructed ... which is something I've always loved about Dali ... the flow of the image. Surrealism allows you the freedom to express flow and movement in any way you want, since you are not confined by the laws of reality. I think Dali is the most obvious example of this characteristic, but since I am no art collector I could be wrong about that.
The symbolism seems very specific as well. Near St. Anthony there are blatant symbols of death, discomfort, and pain ... and the further you move to the right side, the more you see symbols of subconscious desire, including the desire to reach the heavens. Then on the opposite side of the painting, you see the aforementioned phallic symbol, a symbol of fertility and lust ... which seems very deliberate and obvious, and, notice, is placed on the exact OPPOSITE corner of the painting from the symbols that signify death and pain.
Notice how the CROSS is the only thing between St. Anthony and the blatant symbols of lust, power, and greed.
I like how surrealism delves into the mind rather than into any external reality. _________________ ... a chill rises from the soil ... ... and contaminates the air ... ... suddenly ... ... life has new meaning ...

| One more note,
I like how the movement of the image starts in the bottom right corner and moves to the top left ... directly through the middle of the two aforementioned opposing symbolic ends ... as if to suggest the presence of choice and temptation in the viewer's life as well.
Surrealism is very poetic. And Dali is the posterchild of that movement. _________________ ... a chill rises from the soil ... ... and contaminates the air ... ... suddenly ... ... life has new meaning ... |

Points: 1. Those are my thoughts exactly. I could have written that post word for word. 2. Let me add to the first point this: I *get* it. I *understand* it. I can *mentally embrace* all of the symbolism and all of its presence in the painting. I'm not freaking stupid. And I won't pretend to be. I've been looking at Dali paintings a lot longer than the rest of you. 3. With point two stated, let me say that there is a vast difference between *appreciating* and just *looking at*. There are a lot of artists and art that I just don't appreciate........Dali among them. It does nothing for me. Here......let me make an analogy that I think is entirely appropriate. I can appreciate classical music. I can appreciate many other forms of music besides hard/heavy/metal. But......BUT......I can like and enjoy none of them. I'm hard/heavy/metal all the way babeeee. It is the same way with art. I look at a lot of it. I appreciate very little of it. 4. I still (seriously, in total seriousness) think it looks like a Monty Python skit.

I just thought maybe it would be something of a blessing to some, as some of his more religiously oriented works have always been that way for me to some extent. _________________ Dark motions, black eyes, and mournful lust, the wings of solitude ...I'm the hateful raven
