My sister's having surgery today

My sister is having surgery today on her foot. She has been a diabetic for many years, and has not taken care of herself as she should have. A few years ago, she developed a diabetic sore on her toe. She had it operated on to get all the infection out. However, for whatever reasons, she did not take the meds to completely clean it out and prevent it from happening again.

So, today my sister is losing at least the toe. The infection is in the bone, and the surgeon is not sure if it is in any other toe bones. While they are planning on removing her toe, they have forewarned her that they could amputate the entire foot if the infection is that widespread.

She is pretty scared, but trying not to act like it. I'm scared for her, too. I'd appreciate all the prayers we can get right now. If you need more particulars: my sister's name is Miranda, and her surgery is scheduled for 10:30 AM Central.

My sister did just fine with her surgery. They did take her big toe off where it joins the foot. The doctor feels that she will heal just fine if she takes extra special care of the area. Of course, with diabetes, you never know for sure how wounds will heal. The big thing for my sister to do is get her sugar levels under control and stay on the antibiotics until the wound is completely healed.

I feel her pain to some degree. As a diabetic, I'm well aware of the need to control sugar levels and be aware of what's going on with your feet, especially if you've got any small degree of neuropathy. I'm also a 4-toed fella (for other reasons), so I know the challenges there to.

She has my empathy and prayers.
