| I expect a lot of people either own or have heard of these two books, but i just wanted to recommend them to anyone who hadn't.
"How to Read the Bible for All It's Worth"
and also
"How to Read the Bible Book by book"
both by Gordon D. Fee and Douglas Stuart.
I've got a feeling i heard them mentioned on some other thread a few days ago, but i've no idea where and can't find it anymore.
These are two of the best books I've ever come across as regards to reading and understanding the bible. How to Read the Bible for All It's Worth goes through useful techniques in studying and interpreting the various books as well as seperating them into different literary styles and describing how to approach each one, and How to Read the Bible Book by Book goes through each book of the bible providing pretty much anything you need to know to be able to study them effectively (not to say that commentaries etc woudn't be good to have in addition to these)
^ If anyone who has read them can give them a better review then this they're welcome to.. I'm terrible at describing books.
These books are very easy to read and I really couldn't recommend them more highly to anyone here who doesn't yet own them. They're the best study guides i've ever come across, and they were originally recommended to me by the leader of a bible study course attended a couple of years ago above any of the other books he could suggest (and he has read far more widely than i have). _________________

| Actually........
I've never read either one.
I've read something similar but.....I can't remember the author.
Sounds like these would do me good.

Yes, I agree with everything you said here. Two great books to read to help one better understand Scripture. I had to read the first one when I took an "Intro to the Bible" course in college many years ago. And I've read the second one, too. In fact, I've read both of them a few times now.
The seminary where I teach uses "How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth" in its "Hermeneutics" course, which is a required class for all students. I think all the profs who teach it still use that as one of their books, though I haven't taught that particular class yet.
So, definitely, for people who don't have money to burn to buy book after book on Bible study helps, those are two of the best investments a person could make. W&R described them well. If anyone wants to see more info on them, here are the links to their Amazon listings:
How To Read The Bible For All Its Worth
How To Read The Bible Book By Book
You can search parts of each book at Amazon and you'll see that they're not expensive (about $11-13 each). The first one has been around for awhile, so its now in its third edition; you may find it in an earlier edition with a different cover.
Those are great recommendations, Wolf and Raven.
EDIT: Fixed links. Much thanks to Alldat for the great and easy to understand instructions!

| I studied under Doug Stuart. I used to attend Church with his former teaching assistant who proofread How to Read the Bible Book by Book (and spent long hours scanning all the hardcopies of Fee's portions into Stuart's computer about a year before the book was printed. Fee's a great scholar, but his tech savvy needs work ). Fee & Stuart designed that book specifically for laypeople who wonder about things like, 'Why is Ecclesiastes in the Bible?' The book serves that purpose well. |

| Scourge, to do the links like you want, type something like this: Link Then, highlight that word while still in the "Quick Reply" box and then click on the little icon that looks like a small globe with a chain link under it. A box will pop up that you can paste (or type if you prefer) your link URL in it. Then hit OK. Then, your link will have the word you typed as what we see; but if you click it, it will take us where you want us to go. Try this: CD Baby _________________

Chances are very slim that your local Christian book store carries either of those books, but they can order them from Zondervan for you. |
