Bad News

My cousin's fiancee has died.

He called me this morning that
his fiancee had taken a sudden and major turn for the
worse. She had been in and out of the ICU since October, recovering
from major surgery to correct a series of problems in her brain and
upper spinal column that caused her to have regular seizures. They
removed her cerebral tonsils and performed a laminectomy in October.
She spent the next few months recovering and hovering between getting
better and getting worse. She had been improving recently.

In the past week, however, she had stopped breathing and her brain
function had become minimal. This afternoon, they did further tests,
and said that she had suffered brain stem death. As she had specified
that she did not want to be kept alive through mechanical means, life
support was removed, and she passed on this afternoon. She was in her
late 20's. He is
absolutely devastated.

Prayers for all concerned (Jeremy, his fiancee's family, and Jeremy's
mom who may be flying 3,000 miles for the first time in her life to be
with her son) are greatly appreciated.

And, to top it off, my buddy at church - an 84-year-old WW2 marine vet - has been put in the hospital with heart problems.

I spoke with him again yesterday, and his mom and grandmother have arrived. His grandmother is along to balance his mother who is a diagnosed schizophrenic who will try to force her son to come back to North Carolina with her. Hopefully his grandmother will recognize his need to have closure. The funeral is Wednesday.
