I think most people would probably say I hold it wrong, but I dunno. :p
For me it's more the pick I use that is different.

I use these exact ones, thick enough for enough power in heavy rhythmic palm muting (read: power-thrash :p ), but not too thick to limit faster tremelo type playing. Now if you turn this pick some degrees to the left, where it's turned the opposite way, except the little extended hook portion is to the left side, that's how I pick - with that extended portion, and the thumb is far up on it so it can move down quickly for easy pinch harmonics if needed. I like these picks because the size and shape appeals to my fingers better, and how the 'point' of it doesn't have to be in the middle, like I said it's flipped over and I use that long hook for picking, which is only on one side, and it's amazingly versatile.
