PostSubject: New tuners   Thu Jul 12, 2007 7:14 am

I bought some sperzel locking tuners for my Ovation Ultra GS electric. I took the grovers off of it and put them on a BC Rich Im fixing up. I had an odd thing happen.

1. I had to redrill the holes in the headstock to 13/32 so the sleeve would fit over the tuning shaft.

2. I had to drill a .102" hole for the anchor pin into the headstock to seat the tuning machine, they dont screw in like traditional tuning machines.

3. My low E and high E tuning machines now sit lower than the rest of my tuning machines......huh? Im going to go back, hopefully tonight, and drill the anchoring holes a little deeper. Maybe that's why those two seem to sit lower? Its like I have just enough room to get the string in the hole and turn the machine to wrap the string maybe one time and that is it. It is really perlexing.

4. Anyone else ever installed Sperzels or a tuning machine like this?

5. I did my Grovers on this headstock years ago and everything went fine.....why on why do things want to screw up now? I love this guitar and dont want to screw it up.

Well found out the problem. Sperzel makes a style of tuners that are "graduated posts". They are made for Fender headstocks and are suppossed to be this way. Well this doesnt work well for me. Im taking these back and getting some standard tuners....good ones but standard.

You didn't like the Grover tuners on the Ovation? I have Grovers on both of my semi-hollow bodies. I wouldn't have them any other way.

Oh I like them but I needed another set of tuners for my BC Rich that Im fixing up. Soooo I decided that if Im going to put this much into tuners I will put the really nice ones on the guitar I know Im never going to part with...hence the Ovation getting the Sperzels.....which are now going to be Carvin tuners....I ordered them Monday. The Grovers are good tuners though...I highly recommend.
