| Ok, I'm looking to record some stuff on my computer. I have a rockin' soundcard, I just need to find the right software and get some instructions on how to get my rig hooked up to the computer. I know we've talked about this before, but I couldn't find any threads on it. Let me know! Thanks!

| There is a program (free software) called Audacity, which I have been loving as of late.
Pelata turned me on to this, and I'm so glad that he did.
At first I wasn't all that impressed with it, but the more I began to experiment with it, the more I became familiar with its capabilities.
And you can't beat the price.

| Yeah, I downloaded audacity, I just need to play around with actually plugging my bass into the computer lol.

I heard about Audacity from quite a few people, so i decided to try it out. I guess I'm still in that first phase of not being "all that impressed with it".
I'll have to try and take some time with it and see what all it can do.
Anything you can share on what you've found in you experimenting would be cool.

Well first off, I really like the meter-level monitor... its a fantastic visual aid... basically you can boost the volume as necessary, and by keeping an eye on this monitor, you can make sure that no clipping occurs (when it goes from green to red).
Another great visual aid is the one provided for each track, and you can zoom in quite a bit, as needed. This feature comes in handy when you are floating in tracks (for instance, when a musician e-mails you a track for your song). You can nudge it forwards and backwards, and zoom in until you get it just right.
The Fade-In and Fade-Out features are great. Not only do they come in great for fading out the entire song, but you can also use them on individual tracks, to produce cool effects.
I've been having a lot of fun with the Reverse feature, which has come in handy on my latest creation (I've incorporated some backwards guitar).
The Pitch shift features is also pretty cool. By playing with this feature, and layering some cheesy midi sounds, panning left and right, I have been able to create some really thick and professional sounding timbres. I have also used this feature to give a "darker" sound to cymbals and such, on occasion.
I also like the mixing capabilities. The fact that you can get in there and do so much with each track, from volume, to panning, to whatever (boost, fade, etc.). Audacity gives you a lot of control over what's going on in the mix.
After recording the final mixdown to stereo, you can open the stereo mix as a new file and apply the Amplify feature to the entire mix, and it will automatically amply the entire mix as much as possible, without clipping.
These are just the features that come to mind off hand.
The features that I tend to avoid are the Reverb and the Delay. Perhaps if I played with them some more, I would feel more comfortable, but I haven't found any good settings for these effects as of yet. Everything I have tried to do with these has come out sounding a bit cheesy.
The Wah-Wah is ok, but I have found that it's best to use it very sparingly.

| | It comes with a usb port on the back. So my guess is that it exports as standard .wav files. You can use it with most programs. Roland and Cakewalk are now the same. So check out some software from Cakewalk.com. |

| i have heard there are some issues with cakewalk? any truth to this rumour? or has it been fixed?
something about degradation of sound...
I think audacity has tons of potential for a free program, with a 24 bit sound card you should do ok, i think... though i havnt really checked up on how quality it is... i use it for minor things, editing wav files etc.. |

| yeah, i remember clearly being told to stay away from Cakewalk because of something like that by someone, been a couple years... i wonder why he said that, i will hunt him down and ask. he is generally a pretty knowledgable guy and doesnt say things without a reason..
but for the life of me i dont remember why he said it, well other than what i said prior.. might be becuase i was using a free version of the program.

oh yeah i remember now, it had to do with dithering,taking something from 24 bit too 16 bit..
i emailed Dharok to ask him why he didnt like the program, but thats what i recall now. Also its been a good 3 -4 years ago, so that might of had something to do with it too.. any company that deals with recording software would of had to fix issues by this time... |

| | Windows messes alot of programs up. You go to any forum for software and any of the programs used with windows will have people complaning. It could also be hardware conflicts. I have used Cakewalk products for over a decade. In the beginning not knowing the program that well I had some problems but when I learnt more about the program. I went into settings and fixed those gliches. I tried Cubase and Logic way back then as well and couldn't get them to work. Cakewalk was the only one I could get running. My knowledge of computers back them was minimal as well. I say use the program that works best for you. Back then ProTools was only for Mac. Those of you using Mac give Garage Band a try. It is a great little program. You can also get some Pro Tools plug-ins for it at a fraction of the price.(Channel Strip Gold by Metric Halo) Thrice's last album was entirely done in Garage Band. |

| well i currently have a pro tools LE set up on mac... it works great.
I plan on getting garage band too, as i like to mess with loops, and i plan ongetting the cool controller for that, it looks fun! |

| i have an old G4, it didnt come with Garageband...
so i have to get it
I took a G4, added a dual 1.9 processor, a gig of ram (need to upgrade seriously) and got OSX on it... and Pro Tools 7.0 |
