I highly recomend the Doug Marks Metal Method video series. Not only do you get some good guitar lessons from beginner to advanced, he also shows you how to service your own guitar. Everything form changing strings to adjusting the truss rod and intonation. I have used his videos countless times and I no longer need to have someone else service my guitar. In fact I started charging people for servicing their guitars.

Top 5?

#5 - Ole Borud: Mainly he just wrote some riffs that killed me on the inside that they were so good.

#4
- Yngwie J. Malmsteen: He's a big influence for me when it comes to
classical guitar. I try to copy some of his swept arpeggios and I've
generally been getting better.

#3 - Kirk Hammett: I love him
for his pentatonic minor usage. Really he found every way of using it
almost. Big influence with that.

#2 - Alex Lifeson: Similar to the above, but yet he wrote some great modal leads that fit beautifully.

#1
- Mikael Akerfeldt: You just can't beat him. He can write great solos,
knows how to make a song jazzy, and he's just friggin' brutal.

Honourable mention: Chuck Shuldiner: Too cool for school. He just wrote great death metal.

Doood! Ole Borud, Alex Lifeson, and Mikael Akerfeldt ... I have never heard of any of those three. Who are they and what bands are they from?

Hey woe, I am wondering the same thing. I've been wanting to learn to
do basic set-ups n' such for a long time, especially since my JS100
seems to have some chronic problems.

Also, how many videos are in the series? How many of them are
metalinstruction and how many of them are about the 'nuts n' bolts'
side of things?

Here is the link to the guitar setup and repair DVD. I have the 1992 VHS Metal Method tapes and each video had a section on guitar setup and repair, but now they have it all on 1 DVD. I need to get this! Anyway they have a bunch of different lessons. I would look at all of them.

Alex Lifeson is indeed the guitarist from Rush.

Ole Borud was one of the guitarists in Extol, up to the Synergy era.

Mikael Akerfeldt is the guitarist/singer in Opeth.

Hey BTW ... how are those arpeggios coming?? Any improvements?

It's a SLOOWWWW freaking process for me. It's taking for-ever to speed
these things up and make them smooth. But whenever I get frustrated or
down ... I just remember how long it took me to learn other techniques,
like good controlled vibrato, which probably took me a year or more to
really get down. So I figure I've only been working on arpeggios for
about 6 months ... In about another 6 months if I don't have these
things down I'll REALLY start to get frustrated Razz haha

This is good to know (and what I figured). I'm new to it this year so I've been focusing heard on learning chords but I've been doing a lot of finger exercises as well and it's nice to hear/know that it does take time. I envy the savants who can shred and do great solos in 6 months but there's also some satisfaction looking back and saying "I couldn't do that two months ago". As long as I can keep saying that I'll be O.K.!

The arps are coming along pretty well.
I can do the three top strings very easily now, and I'm working on adding in the D string.

also, to chime in for the first time in a few pages....

Ole also was the guitarist/drummer/bass player in Shaliach (his pre-Extol project). Check this thing out as well, because his playing on this one is much doomier and more melodic than th eExtol stuff, showcasing a different side to him....

unfortunately, I haven't picked up my guitar in about 2 months Sad

Yeah man, some people just have huge amounts of dedication. I heard
that Steve Vai used to do a 1o hour per day practice routine when he
was learning. Which is FREAKING CRAZY!!! if you ask me ... but also
explains a lot about him. I greatly respect people with that amount of
dedication.

Just to update everyone, actually the arpeggio playing is coming along great this week!!

I've got about 2 really good syncopated arp licks that I've been
practicing, as well as straight chord progressions. I've also been
slowly but surely learning to play King of Kings by Vinnie Moore, which
contains a lot of arpeggios, so that is helping as well.

When I first started really focusing on arps, around the end of last
semester, I was playing them at 80 bpm (2 notes per beat), which was
DREADFULLY slow. I've been using my metronome and practicing about 1-3
hours a day though, and I'm now playing arps at about 200 bpm, which is
over double my speed a few months ago. It's really encouraging to see
progress, for me, it's a total rush and it's what keeps me coming back
day after day.

I'm also learning basic tapping licks ... i.e. playing the 2 octave
arpeggio shapes and adding a third root with my tapping hand, then
alternating between that and 7th chord arpeggios (and adding an extra tapped 7th note to that as well). I'll post some tabs
of my exercises when I get the time. Like I said, I'm really happy that
I've been doing so well with them recently!!
