PostSubject: FOR ALL MUSICIANS!   Sat Sep 22, 2007 6:56 am

This is for ALL musicians, so if you're a musician, this applies to you!

I confess, I'm curious to know, and I hope this thread can be a fun one. What level are you at, with your music/singing? It doesn't matter if you've been a musician for one day, or twenty-two years. Are you a beginner? Intermediate? Fairly advanced? Pro level? And if you'd like to share some of your struggles and triumphs along the way, go for it!

Go ahead; be honest! If you're a beginner, admit it. If you're at the pro level, admit that too!!! I mean it. You DIDN'T have your success handed to you, you've WORKED to get where you are, musically, and God has BLESSED your efforts!

Yes, I know it's a real "turn-off" when people take it upon THEMSELVES to "toot their own horn," but it's NOT wrong to answer a question honestly when you are asked!

Best wishes to all of you musicians/singers! You guys ROCK!

Guitar - raw beginner.....started in April. I figured I wasn't too old to try something new. Every day and especially when watching accomplished players I wonder "what am I doing" but I can do things now that two months ago seemed impossible. I figure if I travel the road and put in my time it will happen. I remind myself that when a complete novice watches someone typing it looks like a miracle. It's practice, practice, practice! Smile

Drums - suck.
Keyboards - suck a whole lot less (use mostly to write).
Brass - not half-bad, chosen for "All City" back in the day.
Lead guitar - nowhere near as good as I used to be.
Acoustic/12 - solid worship leader.
Other strings - hold my own (mandolin mostly).
Blues harp - fake it long enough and you've gotta improve.
Singing - well this is a matter of opinion, isn't it?

I began my "career" as an avid music fan who had to choose an elective in Jr. High and thought band class sounded fun.
I followed up by asking for a guitar the next year for my birthday cuz brass just wasn't "doing it" for me.
By my Sr. year in high school I was getting private piano lessons to help me with music theory and was in the Jazz Band (guitar), Concert band (french horn) and marching band (biratone horn).
I conducted at our graduation ceremonies and could have gone straight into the honors program at our local JC...but I wanted to be a rockstar! Doh!
What is that they say, "Be cool, stay in school..."
Not a huge regret, but the education and the contacts that I missed out on could have made things a whole lot easier. Stay in school.

Oh yeah! I never sang until I joined Neon Cross. I was a lead guitarist all the way and avoided even singing back-up because it took away from my concentration for guitar...but that's another story Wink

Bass: Intermediate (Been playing for 21 years!)
Electric Guitar: Somewhere between beginner and intermediate
Acoustic Guitar: Intermediate
Keyboards: I don't do keyboards
Drums: I just suck! I can play, but not well enough to record
Vocals: Depends on what I am doing. I have a very strong natural baritone that sounds great with hymns and classic crooning like Sinatra. But, my metal voice is very limited in range.

this is the result of someone who doesn't practice nearly enough:

Guitar (mostly acoustic)-probably intermediate...i've done various worship stuff at church and retreats...but my level does not equate with the years i've played it (about 6)
Bass-between beginner and intermediate. i like this instrument. a lot of room for movement if you know what you're doing
Keyboards-kinda the same as bass...i've only been doing it seriously since april (bass for about 3 years)
Vocals-Intermediate. i've done alot of choral stuff and have been developing this the longest...but not quite as good as i could. range is baritone...yet limited at times. very good with harmony and lead.
Drums-this is non-existant. i played snare and bass for one year...i remember nothing. but i do have good sense of rhythm

well.. I'm never one to toot my own horn and I never will. I will say that I've been playing guitar(metal) for 26 years. Whether some say it's good or it sucks is in the ear of the beholder. I really just play because I like the sound and enjoy playing... whether it sounds good to anybody else is purely speculation. As long as I enjoy it.. that's all that matters...

as for singing... my previous bands did not give me a microphone for a reason...lol.... I stink at singing.....

I teach bass and guitar. I would say I am little better then intermediate on guitar and intermediate on bass. The rest of the instruments I play I am a hack. Smile

You're too modest... I've seen your playing. Shred-o-riffic! I'd say you are definatly close to pro.
