The dream for many, is to own a Gibson Les Paul. For those of you who own or have owned these land mark guitars...congradulations! But let's face it, if you're aspiring to buy a new one or a used one, there are certain laws that you just can't escape.

They cost a ton of money! affraid

Over the years I have had eight Gibson Les Pauls. There are three I wish I still had! It could be more due to the fact that I worked in music stores for years and had other Les Pauls for short periods of time plus I had up to seventeen guitars at one time, but eight Les Pauls stand out for me. It was Ace Frehley's fault and I had to have that guitar...the Gibson Les Paul.

I sold them new, used, refinished, and as vintage reissues from Gibson. So why am I telling you this?

It's to simply clear the air about the pricing of very well made but mass produced guitars that blow a hole in a few thousand dollars easily. To get one from the Custom Shop is out of this world. True, you pay for the name and there are some great "knock offs" or copies out there that can do the job just as good if not better. What are you willing to pay?

I love old Gibson Les Pauls as well as the Vs and Explorers. I'm not here to run the Gibson company down.

The article that I present to you is one of the best ever as to getting to the nuts and bolts of what you get for your money when it comes to a Gibson Les Paul. I can totally relate with the gentleman being interviewed.
Take the time to read it and do your own research before you go out to purchase one of these guitars.

Opinions will vary, but doing your homework will make you a solid educated buyer. Buying one of these guitars is an investment of sorts.

Enjoy the read and God Bless.

Owned a few Pauls over the years. Gibsons were once the standard but today frankly there are better guitars around for less money!! A Heritage for example is what a Custom shop Gibson SHOULD be and was built by the same guys who for YEARS were working for Gibson in the old Kalamazoo plant and are less expensive!!
Frankly the USA Chigago Custom shop Washburn WM-4 I bought last year for $400 off ebay (new list was right at $2000) blows any of the Pauls I have owned or played away in workmanship, Playability and the tones are to die for.
That plus they seem to spend a lot of time harassing other manufacturers in court.
I'm not a Gibson fan!

For myself, I never really liked the sound or feel of the Les Paul. I've had several guitars over the years, but I just didn't like those for my own personal use.

For the money, I would buy the less expensive Epiphone Les Paul anyway. OK< the wood is a bit softer, and the pickups not quite as nice, but you can shave up to $2k off the price of a new guitar and still be getting a quality guitar.

For example, I finally found a guitar I love: the 335 body style. I like the wide neck, the tones, the vintage shape, etc. I played a Gibson Dot, but they were $2399 new. The Epiphone Dot was only $399. They both have the same pickups and Grover tuners factory installed. Ok, so one was made here in the USA and the other in China. But, taking the price out of the equation, I actually preferred the feel of the Epi over the Gibson.

Of course, now I own 2 335s, and one of them is a Mexican off-brand: an SX. But, after I had Grover tuners put on it, and had a pro set up performed, it is a more solid guitar than the Epiphone.

So, you can say that one guitar is better than another, and sometimes it is so. But, it mostly comes down to you finding a feel and sound you prefer and sticking with it.
