No, it was actually a good heavy rock record...had it been another band w/ the same songs, I don't think people would have such bad opinions of it. But, since it had the Metallica name on it and it was so different from anything they'd done, it was not well-received by many of thier fans.

Yes, well stated.

I like it, but don't hold it in the same esteem as the first few albums.

ult

ditto. I think there are a couple of really good songs, but overall, the disc leaves me wanting and wondering....

No. It was NOT a bad album! It had "loads" (pun intended) of great songs on it with heavy harmonies and original riffs. Okay, so it wasn't speed or thrash--but it was still a VERY good metal album though. Songs like The House Jack Built and King Nothing really stand out for me on that album.

I don't think it was a bad album.Honestly it's a great album.I think a reason people were so hard on it was because up untill that point metallica was still being credited for master of puppets.Original fans were feeling left out in the rain once metallica started new styles of metal and heavy rock.

Once I got over the fact that this wasn't MoP part 2, I finally began to let Load grow on me, Very good disc.

What seemed odd to me is that they chose "Until It Sleeps" as the first single.

I remember when it was going to first be played on WRIF in Detroit, and I couldn't wait to hear it -- and then thought, WTF?

The rest of the album is ok, just thought it was weird they put a snoozer like Until It Sleeps out first...

If it were me I would have The House that Jack Built as their first single

The only Load album I think that was garbage was Re-load

House That Jack Built and Outlaw torn are great songs. I like Load in general, but reload is mostly trash.

Not *that* bad. There were chunks of good and mature songwriting on it.

Also consider, the source of the cliche is primarily a large group of people who only listen to Metallica and maybe 4-5 other classic metal/thrash bands, and that's the typical extent of their musical experience. :p A giant portion of Metallica fans have never heard of this thing called 'rock'. There won't be an unskewed vision to be found.

Hmmmm.... interesting, however, 'rock' should be full of passion. I try to keep in mind that not only did their music change, they also lost that vim and vigor.

I don't listen to it or reload. Though I have both on cassette simply to complete the Metallica cassette tape collection. I like St. Anger better than Load/Reload. But I don't listen to St. Anger anymore either. I guess the only thing I spin from them anymore lately is the latest and justice and back.
