LOL! Nonetheless, it was really quite cutting edge in it's day. Rush has always had a knack for re-inventing their sound as well as their persona over their 34 year history, but the early days of the "Star Man" were very special. In fact the Rush "Star Man" logo has been one of metals most influential. I remember once hearing Geddy Lee explaining the meaning of the symbol on an episode of Rock Line w/ Bob Coburn. He said it was not meant to be pro-satanic at all. It symbolizes the individuals stand against the world system. So the star represents an anti-Christ archetype and the nakedness of the man represents how vulnerable we are against the corruptions in political power. Really quite profound if you think about it. It all began on the 2112 album, which tells the story of a civilization where music becomes illegal and one man fights to try to preserve it. Great album.. It should be,, it just went quadruple platinum a few years ago.

YES! I saw them their last 2 times around and was blown away again! Saw them also on the Signals, p/g, Power Windos & Hold Your Fire tours. Stellar! Wish I could have seen them in their hay day!
But I like their new music. it is almost as if they are reaching out to God a bit. nice to see that in their lyrics. Perhaps Neil Peart is being converted??
Here's a cool vintage Rush tune.. "The Necromancer" from Caress Of Steel (1975)
Rush "The Necromancer" from Caress Of Steel (1975)
I. Into The Darkness "As grey traces of dawn tinge the eastern sky, the three travelers, men of Willowdale, emerge from the forest shadow. Fording the River Dawn, they turn south, journeying into the dark and forbidding lands of the Necromancer. Even now the intensity of his dread power can be felt, weakening the body and saddening the heart. Ultimately they will become empty, mindless spectres; stripped of will and soul, only their thirst for freedom gives them hunger for vengeance..."
Silence shrouds the forest As the birds announce the dawn Three trav'llers ford the river And southward journey on The road is lined with peril The air is charged with fear The shadow of his nearness Weighs like iron tears
II. Under the Shadow "Shreds of black cloud loom in overcast skies. The Necromancer keeps watch with his magic prism eyes. He views all his lands and is already aware of the three helpless invaders trapped in his lair..."
Brooding in the tower Watching o'er his land Holding ev'ry creature Helplessly they stand Gaze into his prisms Knowing they are near Lead them to the dungeons Spectres numb with fear They bow defeated
III. Return of the Prince "Enter the Champion. Prince By-Tor appears to battle for freedom from chains of long years. The spell has been broken; the Dark Lands are bright. The Wraith of the Necromancer soars away in the night."
Stealthily attacking By-Tor slays his foe The men are free to run now From labyrinths below The Wraith of Necromancer Shadows through the sky Another land to darken With evil prism eye. _________________

1. That video is from the 2nd RUSH album released in 1975, Anthem is the song. I was 18. This video gives me goosebumps for a few seconds, at the start, every time I watch it and hear the music. I love this song, I love this album.
2. Watch the video if you've not done so. Over time i've heard some peeps talk about RUSH as a 'wimpy and wussy' band that can't 'rock out'. Bluntly.......these peeps don't know what they are talking about. This video encapsulates and captures, very nicely, the fact that these guys could flat out move and boogie with the best of them. These guys were fast, technical, and good.
The first few RUSH albums are similar to the music in the above video. Intense and excellent IMO. These guys impressed me a lot back in the 1970s.......they were often, often found on my turntable *back in the day*.
3. In that video above......the guitarist......Alex Lifeson.......he has my hair. Seriously, he does. I loved it. I did not try to look like him......at all. In fact, I had that style (or lack of it) long before he did. I did not part my hair until I was 20 in 1977. In 1975 my hair was exactly the same as his, exactly the same length too. It was even a rather similar color. It was cool having the same hair as a rocker.

| Anthem is a great song, and really cool to see them performing it. They had an intensity back then that they never have picked up again. Comes from getting older, I suppose.
I saw them live only once, on the Counterparts tour. They put on a stellar show. _________________ It's almost like religion is what happens when the Spirit has left the building. - Bono |

Very cool! If you get a chance buy the Rush n Rio DVD. It is STELLAR!!
Thank you guys for making this Rush thread so enjoyable!!
I thought the turntable videos were really cool. What an Idea huh?? You may already know that The Necromancer was the second part of the story of Bytor & The Snow dog. What another pioneer song in Metal!!! This tune went on to inspired such bands as Living Sacrifice, Slayer and Tourniquet.
"By-Tor And The Snow Dog"
Tobes of Hades, lit by flickering torchlight The netherworld is gathered in the glare Prince By-Tor takes the cavern to the north light The sign of Eth is rising in the air
By-Tor, knight of darkness Centurion of evil, devil's prince
Across the River Styx, out of the lamplight His nemesis is waiting at the gate The Snow Dog, ermine glowing in the damp night Coal-black eyes shimmering with hate
By-Tor and the Snow Dog Square for battle, let the fray begin
The battle's over and the dust is clearing Disciples of the Snow Dog sound the knell Rejoicing echoes as the dawn is nearing By-Tor, in defeat, retreats to Hell
Snow Dog is victorious The land of the Overworld is saved again _________________

NICE!!
From what I have read from Niel Peart, once By-Tor was defeated by the snow dog he had a falling out with the devil and became the champion of good against the Necromancer. Hmm.... Interesting.. I love the stories! they like created their own mythology.. _________________

1.
I wish I had $10 for every time that i've watched that video since you put it up and started this thread. If I got $10 for each viewing i'd probably have enough money to take my wife out to dinner at the revolving restaurant in the top of the Space Needle.
2. I love Alex Lifeson's hair in that video.
I miss mine whenever I see it.

| I only recently (in the past year and a half or so) got into Rush, and I'm sad it took me so long. While Peart's incredibly talented, it's easy to ignore that Lee and Lifeson are two of the most talented musicians on the planet. Lee, in particular, is a phenomenal bass player who's influenced entire genres of music.

Not that I can tell. He went through a rough patch a while back, but his lyrics ultimately point towards his Ayn Rand's Objectivism. Nearly all of "Snakes and Arrows" is about faith and religion, and his rejection of both. To quote "Faithless":
I've got my own moral compass to steer by A guiding star beats a spirit in the sky And all the preaching voices - Empty vessels of dreams so loud As they move among the crowd Fools and thieves are well disguised In the temple and market place
Like a stone in the river Against the floods of spring I will quietly resist
Like the willows in the wind Or the cliffs along the ocean I will quietly resist
I don't have faith in faith I don't believe in belief You can call me faithless I still cling to hope And I believe in love And that's faith enough for me
I've got my own spirit level for balance To tell if my choice is leaning up or down And all the shouting voices Try to throw me off my course Some by sermon, some by force Fools and thieves are dangerous In the temple and market place
Like a forest bows to winter Beneath the deep white silence I will quietly resist
Like a flower in the desert That only blooms at night I will quietly resist _________________

| Yep, I'll give due props to Rush for being one of the first bands I discovered to give me hope that rock and roll wasn't all a pile of crap. I grew up back when bands like Poison and Motley Crue were first lauded and considered actually good or even great. Then I slowly discovered bands like Rush, Queensryche, Kansas, Yes and Queen that gave me hope. |

Nice FIVER! TY
Perhaps Neil isn't close to conversion after all, Fiver Ty. I hadn't read those lyrics to that song. I was impressed by "Working Them Angels" & "Armour & Sword". Perhaps I was just thinking of what the terms mean to me in my faith. Oh well.. They are great musician. We can always pray for them eh?

| | I never could get into this band and I hate Geddy Lee's vocals. I love Progressive Metal and I give Rush credit for what they have done for the genre. I actually did buy their greatest hit's a couple of months ago I need to give them another chance but it's the vocals. |
