I have been listening to Operation: Mindcrime daily for about 2 weeks now. I had this album back in the day, and liked it then; but I got rid of it because I thought it slammed my faith. I recently heard more from the band about the storyline and the intent of the record, and decided to get it again. HOLY SMOKE! This is going to easily be one of my top 5 albums of all time. I can't believe people like The Warning more than this masterpiece. This blows The Warning away!
Geoff Tate's voice on this thing gives me chills when its layered on some of the bigger chorus hooks such as I Don't Believe In Love, Revolution Calling, Breaking The Silence and Eyes of a Stranger. The guitar work is outstanding. The songs have some progressive tendencies, but stay more on the melodic, accessible side of things.
I don't know if its the remastering or if the original recording had this too, but the production and sound quality on this thing are darn near perfect. I'd be interested in hearing the original version vs. the remastered version I bought.
The live tracks added as bonus tracks are boring and I will probably never listen to them again. I'm not a big fan of live recordings anyway, and the album versions of the two live songs absolute crush the live versions.
It's really a shame that they left this sound and style behind. I would love to have heard more from them in this style. Ah well, at least I have this one.
I'm not excited to get Rage for Order because I suspect they will not be able to top O:M.
