| From my brushes with this band, the earlier the better. I say brushes because I do not own an Opeth album yet. However the brushes are significant enough as I watched an old concert DVD by them (that started with '03 stuff, I think) that just bored me to tears. Generally, "Orchid" and "My Arms, Your Hearse" seem to be the best, IMO. There's so much stuff surrounding this band, it's hard for me to work up the nerve to buy any. I also don't like how people treat them as the masterminds of progressive metal...or whatever. Like I said, I don't own any CD's by them (though that has never stopped me from having an opinion ) so you can ignore my advice or take it. _________________ "He had discovered Time and Death and God"-Aldous Huxley

| Opinions are like. . . oh, wait. Yes - you can have an opion - that's cool with me. I like hearing them - usually the ones that are different than mine more so - so I am forced to really think about why I have such an opinion. So feel free to share! I did see a live dvd - that might be interesting. |

| Yup - agree with both y'all. I just like them so far. But really like them. Of course - it's not like they made Scenes from a Memory or anything - best album ever. Or sang like Russell Allen - and the gutteral stuff is what kept me away for so long - now I just tolerate it. |

| Blackwater Park, and My Arms, Your Hearse, wes.....those are the other "must have" discs, IMO. I've got a SLIGHT preference for MAYH, but that's simply because it's thje slightly more deathy of the two. There's not a HUGE difference in them, though. MAYH DOES have the classic "Demon of the Fall" on it, though..... the earlier in the discography yo go, the more deathy and less prog they are. though they still weren't like much of the other DM from the time periods. Orchid and Still Life show where they were headed, MAYH and BP are where they finally "got" their sound, and everything after BP has been simple refinements in the overall scheme of things, steering ever so slighty more towards the "prog" tip, lessening the actuall DM moments..... _________________ Obama is no more the Anti-Christ than George Bush is Sauron, sending his armies into Iraq searching for the One Ring.....

| Good on ya Wes, buying an Opeth album is/was one of the best choices I ever made musically. All opinions above are entirely valid, and exo's piece is 100% correct I reckon. Time for an unrestrained fanboy view perhaps . I own all their cd's ( 9 studio, 1 live ) and dvd's ( 3 ) , and I've seen them live as well. They are the only band I have where my favourite album is whichever one I'm listening to. They are extremely consistent, and if you like Watershed, you are gonna most likely dig almost all their stuff man. How many bands are that good after 9 albums? I'd recommend Morningrise ( very prog ), Still Life ( concept ), Blackwater Park ( arguably their most popular ), and Ghost Reveries ( prog/dynamic ). My Arms, Your Hearse and Deliverance are also excellent. The tag of progressive death metal is pretty apt I'd say. I'd rate Mike Akerfeldt as one of THE most talented guys in metal Sorry 'bout the rant, but I can't recommend this band highly enough Buy 'em all Wes!! |

| Blackwater Park and Deliverance are my faves.... Also check out Damnation. I really really enjoy that one. It's a completely different sound than any other Opeth album. Check it out! _________________ My Heroes |

| Yeah, Damnation is really cool as well. As for dvd's the best ones are Lamentations (1st half mellow songs, 2nd half heavy songs, + great studio footage/insight to recording Deliverance & Damnation. I found this dvd excellent ), and if you buy deluxe edition of Ghost Reveries you get a wicked bonus dvd with more studio work etc. Their old drummer Martin is probably even better than the new guy |

| For me all albums are great, but I'm not huge fan of them so I don't see big difference between them. However, I really enjoyed their first 2 albums. In next albums they became sligthly worse. |

| Ok, I'm listening to Damnation now and I think this one was not to my liking before. It's mostly mellow and I think I liked the dynamics of the other one better at last listen. I am diggin the lyrical content, tho _________________ only symbols can be twisted ,burned, spat on etc.NOTHING truly Holy can be desecrated..... - Sabbath Steve

| I love Opeth....everything they've done so far has been to my liking. I think part of the charm is that Mikael Akerfeldt is such a rabid prog and classic rock fan, so he channels all of his influences and inspiration into the music. To me, it comes off sounding more genuine. I love the Damnation/Deliverance albums. When my son was a baby, he would sleep to the Damnation album...I have some fond memories of it. |
