Too much "Wooooooarrrrrrrrgggghhhhh" style vocals for my ears.

Too bad too because musically, I've liked what I've heard.

I must give credit where due.

I stole it from Pelata.

That's funny. I can stand a little of it...

Listening to those two discs, vocally speaking I thought I was listening to Pink Floyd in one song and then in another song, Tool.

Maybe all or most of the rest is as you described

I can stand a little too (Sirenia, some Epica) and even a lot sometimes (Haggard, Hollenthon). But something about the growling on the songs I've heard by Opeth just really turns me off.

I think it's because I think I could really get into this band without the growls.

That said, I own nothing by this band and it's entirely possible that there's a tolerably growly album by them that I would like. I've just heard random songs people have sent me and couldn't stand the vocals on any of them. An album with Pink Floyd or Tool vox would probably appeal to me.

Toho! Check out the album Damnation! It has no "woooaarrghgh" vocals at all. It's very mellow and bluesy.

I think that was the album featured on one of the dvds that was just snore-inducing.

lol! Yeah you're right in the first part there BFTD, they play all of Damnation on the Lamentations dvd.
It's pretty mellow man. But it's a great album IMO.
Did you make it to the second half though?
Much heavier, and by the bands' own admission "this is what we really sound like".

How is the band lyrically? I mean specifically in regards to content, etc.

All over the board....Akerfeldt writes a LOT of occult themed material, though it's not in the "hail Satan" vein; it's much more towards the whole "romantic ghostly tragedy" type of thing.

But if that bothers you, stay away from Bloodbath's new one. Laughing

I was aware of Opeth's more traditional sound....that's why I found it snore-inducing. I'm not against mellow music, by any means, but that bit of Opeth I heard just didn't register as Opeth....as I suppose they admitted.

Yes, prog for sure. But some of the guitar tone and leads give it a bluesy vibe at least to my ears. I listened to Deliverance in the car today. Absolute masterpiece.

I really like the album "damnation!" Blackwater Park is probably my least favorite. I would love to see them live sometime! I bet they put on an amazing performance!
