PostSubject: Lead singer solo projects   Thu Oct 22, 2009 4:03 pm

What are some solo albums done by lead singers of bands, and what do you think of them? Here's a few to get it started:

Steven Patrick (Holy Soldier) - Red Reign
Brilliant album!!!

Scott Wetzel (Whitecross) - Heart Like Thunder and Film at Eleven
Heart Like Thunder is pretty solid and I enjoy that album a great deal. Film at Eleven bored me to tears.

Don Dokken (Dokken) - Up From The Ashes
Brilliant album!!! Easily on par with the great Dokken albums of the 80's. I actually think I listen to this just a tad more than the Dokken albums. The opening track ("Crash 'N Burn") is a blistering melodic metal song that is one of my top 20 songs of all time.

Rob Halford (Judas Priest) - Crucible
This album did little for me. I don't know why as I love Rob's voice, but I just couldn't get into this one at all.

Michael Sweet (Stryper) - s/t, Real, Truth
I love his first self-titled album....great Bryan Adams-style rock. Real is kinda boring to me. Truth is solid and a harder-edged album. But the s/t is probably my favorite of these.

Rob Rock (Driver, Impellitteri) - you know these!
All good to great albums, but I put Holy Hell above them all.

Jon Bon Jovi (duh!) - Blaze of Glory soundtrack
A good album, but the music was really fitted to that western theme and as such, doesn't interest me for listening too much.

I know there's more, like Glenn Kaiser, Mike Tramp, Bruce Dickenson, Paul Stanley, etc.

Some of my favorites:

Jani Lane - Back Down To One
Michael Sweet - Truth
Vince Neil - Exposed and Carved In Stone
Bruce Dickinson - any of his solo albums

Not sure they count as true "solo" albums, but Halford did some stuff with Fight and his Halford bands that I loved and Jack Blades did two great albums with Tommy Shaw.

By far my favorite lead singer solo project is Pink Cream 69 singer David Readman's disc.

I LOVE Paul Stanley's '78 solo album! "Tonight You Belong To Me," "Ain't Quite Right," and "Take Me Away" are AMAZING songs.

I love KISS, and none of their solo albums can top KISS -- but these three songs are musical in a way that KISS couldn't (and shouldn't) be...extremely melodic, but still having a heaviness. They're moody. I dig 'em.

Big shocker here, but I think Jack Russell's solo stuff outside Great White is excellent!

I like Paul's last solo disc, Live To Win, also.

Don Dokken's solo disc was definitely good. I like it a lot.

Jon Bon Jovi's disc is KILLER, man! Great, great songwriting on that disc.

As Acorn said, Jani Lane's solo effort is solid. Lots of good songs...too bad they are wasted now.

Vince Neil's solo stuff...also good...

Tamplin--self-titled, especially, but also Wake The Nations and a couple of his other solo discs. Some great songs!

Sebastian Bach's solo stuff is excellent, I think.

I personally loved Halford's solo disc.

Dee Snider's solo disc, as mentioned in another thread, is really good.

Also dig LaBrie's solo disc.

Oh...can't forget U.D.O. from Udo Dirkschneider of Accept fame!

Did NOT like Geoff Tate's (Queensryche) solo disc. Very boring. No idea why I still own it...probably because no one will buy/trade for it.

Bret Michaels is VERY hit or miss as a solo artist.

Hanoi Rocks singer Michael Monroe is kinda hit or miss as a solo artist but he hit one out of the park with "Not Fakin' It".

Philip Lynott - Solo in Soho, The Philip Lynott Album and the many live albums to have been released since his death. All of it brilliant.

Dee Snider - Widowmaker, Desperado, Dee Snider's SMF... Love it all!

Rob Halford - Fight, Halford, all great IMO. Not a big fan of the one non-metal project he did.

Ace Frehley - Both Frehley's Comet albums, and all his solo material is superb. I've been listening to his latest Anomoly non-stop.

David Lee Roth - Eat 'Em And Smile is the best album Van Halen never recorded. Like it better than anything Van Hagar recorded.

Mogg/Way - Phil Mogg is UFO's vocalist. Mogg/Way is esentially UFO without the name. Two CDs, both good though Chocolate Box is the best of the two.

Rob Rock's are my favorites and Halford's and Bach's are pretty great.
Joe Lynn Turner's are hit and miss but he's done a couple good ones.

Agreed. Up From The Ashes sounds like a good Dokken album, while George Lynch's solo stuff is just 'meh' for the most part.

Not really a 'solo' project, but the singer for Symphony X, Russell Allen, and the singer for Jorn/Ark/Masterplan/Beyond Twilight, Jorn Lande, have a couple of albums out together. Allen-Lande 'The Battle' is a great power metal album, and the follow-up, 'The Revenge' is pretty decent too.

From what I read, he is planning to do a solo acoustic project at some point....that would be KILLER. Mikael Akerfeldt's slower, more acoustic stuff in Opeth is unbelievable! If it all sounded like Patterns in The Ivy II and Still Day Beneath the Sun, I would have no complaints whatsoever.
