| What does everyone think of the new Veni Domine CD, "Tongues"? Well, I have been playing it the past week or so and it has steadily grown on me.
It is quite different when compared to the bands prior effort "23:59". While "23:59" was a dark and swarthy - almost goth-like - work, "Tongue" is the heavier and more up-tempo effort- all the while maintaining the same progressive doom sensibilities the bands is best known for.
If anything, "Tongues" is the heaviest and most guitar driven CD from Veni Domine to date. The lead guitar work of TW is nothing short of amazing (wait until you hear his guitar solos!).
Musically, the songs don't immediately grab you- I would describe them as having perfectly subtle melodies. But, still, the album is consistent from front to back. I would rate it at 90%
You can hear samples at: http://www.myspace.com/venidomine
A more detailed review should be forthcoming shortly. |

| Points:
1. All the VENI DOMINE albums are in the vault, and none of them had to grow on me......I love them all, right from the first listen. My least favorite is Spiritual Wasteland, but even that is liked and was not really a grower.
2. I've not heard the new one yet. But as I type this it is coming from Paal and Nordic Mission in Norway, with a bunch of other stuff. I expect it any day, actually. Can't wait.
3. I don't expect this one shall be any different. IMO it won't be a grower at all, and from what you say......i'm going to love it. (Kevin probably will too)

| | The last two were "growers" for me, this is not a bad thing though, it simply means they take some time to digest, like a good complex movie you watch several times before you "get it", got it? Good! |

| Interesting. Difference in terminology and word definition then.
To me a "grower" is not an album that I like at first......but then it just takes longer to "digest" it audially, as it is complex. To me a "grower" is an album that--at first--I don't like as much as I will like it, with repeated listens. To be honest........some "growers" for me i've listened to once or twice and......I don't like it very much at all. Not dislike, but just not too *hot* to listen to, and I am not impressed with it. But I persist in spinning it......and over time.......the album really starts to "grow" on me sometimes. And.......i'm like, "Wow!! That really is good!! Glad I spun that another *X number* times!!" That's a "grower" to me.

| My relationship with VD albums is a curious one... I've got Fall Babylon, Material Sanctuary and Spiritual Wasteland and while I can recognise the musical quality in all of them I like each new one less than the previous.
I really like their debut because the songs are more straightforward: less drawn out than on subsequent albums. I don't know the term, maybe they are getiing more doom as they go along. I just like the debut a lot more.
Could probably give the later ones a try to see if they slot in better into my tastes.
EDIT: Come to think of it, it's a lot like my feelings on Saviour Machine's evolution. _________________ I have vague plans for World Domination

| My orders from both Australia and Norway came this afternoon. So this album will be in my playlist post from work this week......and probably in the playlist thread besides that one post. I'm sure i'll love it.

| I like the new CD. But I liked the last one better. Still, they can nver touch the greatness that is Material Sanctuary though. I wish they could get some better production the next time. _________________

Couldn't agree more! I hope we get a budget for the next cd, making cds for 0 USD is not optimal! I decided to focus on the positive sides, pleasing Chrsitian metalheads are not easy these days ( not complaining) ha ha ha. It would be great having some help with the production, mixing, song writing or whatever really. Well time will tell... Cya! Torb |

Maybe so....... ......but i'll be an exception to that.
Unless an album--by anybody--is a truly stinky audio turd, it matters not to me how it is/was produced. Some peeps are--IMO--overly sensitive/caring about this whole issue. I come from the 1970s and this was not an issue back then. By comparison with today's production standards and capabilities, everything then sounded (insert the critical and disparaging, hypercritical and finicky statement of your choice here) worse compared to contemporary production standards. Please, allow me to say........whatever.
Others can have their opinions, that is what this *music game* is. Opinions. There is mine.
I think your new CD is great. It shall be a proud addition to the VENI DOMINE wing of the vault. It shall fit there nicely, with all your other CDs.

| My overall impression is that, yes, "Tongues" would have benefited from a slight touch of polish. That being said, the production values to the album are by no means detracting.
In my original post, I mentioned "Tongues" is the bands most guitar driven effort to date. And in order to achieve such a "guitar based sound" sometimes it is beneficial to back off a bit in the area of polish.
Just my two cents. |

| There is a difference between "polish" and "good production". I don't care if it's all polished and glossy but I do care if it's clear and sonically enjoyable. _________________ "It is better to be hated for what you are than loved for what you are not." |
