Received the Guardian CD Fire and Love in the mail the other day to replace my old cassette version. After not listening to it in a long time, I can still say that it is a great classic gem. I think that it is one of the best albums that Guardian has ever released, just a couple of notches ahead of Miracle Mile and First Watch. Their first 3 albums in my opinion are their best work. Swing Swang Swung has some good moments and some moments that are less memorable. They had this album in the works for a couple of years perhaps since the Fire and Love era. Some songs I liked are The Way Home Back, C'mon Everyone, Rich Man Over the Line, Preacher and the Bear, and Why Don't We I did mind Buzz but some of the songs were too short and the song structure didnt emphasize much on harmony and melodic/guitar soloing as much which sort of left you wanting more. This Old Man, Lead The Way, State of Mine, Lions Den, Pyschadelic Runaway, and Are You Gonna keep Your Word are good tunes. Where Buzz left off as a transition/expermential album, Bottle Rocket took it to a whole new frontier into alternative/modern 90's hard rock/rock world. In my opinion, this is the first Guardian album that contained too many fillers. In addition, the drums were mixed in places where they were hard to hear. I found this one hard to get into. The better songs are Are We Feeling Comfortable Yet?, Bottle Rocket, Coffee Can, Revelation, and Salvation, Like Buzz, this one lacke din the guitar soloing department. So First Watch, Fire and Love and Miracle Mile are my favorite Guardian albums which had alot of great songs.

Fire and Love is my favorite Guardian CD. I like all their stuff to one degree or another, but this one is their pinnacle, IMO. I remember when it came out and I listened to it, I loved every single song. That was (and still is) a rarity for me. A great album to be sure!

Plus Fire & Love had one of the best Christian power ballads of all time, "Never Say Goodbye". This is the album that shot Jamie Rowe right to the top of my favorite hard rock singers. He just has that voice that fits this style perfectly

I would definitely love to get this remastered. It is still the best of the Guardian catalog with "Miracle Mile" running up a close 2nd. But, even the worst Guardian is far better than some bands. _________________ "I have no desire to speak w/other tongues, I already do enough damage w/the one I have!!" - Candlemass

Great album, but I think Miracle Mile just pips it in terms of songwriting, versatility and production. Guardian were a band who were never going to stand still (geddit?), so you were never going to get the same album twice! But to give Fire and Love some love (and I do love it!), essential tunes like Never Say Goodbye (one of the greatest ballads of all time), Power of Love, Takin' on the World and The Rain are the standouts for me.

Fire And Love, to me, is the pinnacle of Guardian's catalog, although Miracle Mile is excellent, also. I love both, but F&L just speaks to me lyrically, especially on tracks like "Time Stands Still", "Time And Time Again", and even the title track. I still say that if you took the Christian label away from it, this album could have received solid airplay and probably sold gold back in the day. Very good point. If Guardian had not asked to be freed of their Enigma contract, Fire and Love would of been released under the Enigma label. With a major secular record label like Enigma behind them, I have no doubt that Fire and Love would of been a huge mainstream success.

YES! If FaL could be remastered to give it a more "thick" sound, I'd probably like it more. I think John & Dinos' production job on there stripped out most of the real power, and left the album sounding a bit too thin & wimpy. The production job they did for "Miracle Mile" was an improvement, and the Fear Not album sounded even better. Had they had that kind of thick, crunchy sound, FaL would probably have been a candidate for overall fav Guardian album. As it stands, it's just really good for what it is. |
